Why would anyone be so desperate to drink while pregnant that they’d bother with fake beer?

Plain sparkling water would be better for mom and baby.

This will probably be an unpopular opinion but, I think the baby would be fine. Not in my personal experience but my mothers (she is full irish and my dad is full russian) she had a 6 oz glass of wine once a week the whole time she was pregnant and I suffered from no birth defects or complications. So in other words I think NA beer would be okay.

Bellagiobride:  I think it’s probably fine.  Depending on what you read now there are studies that say a glass of wine a day is fine for pregnant women.

She’s not drinking enough to get hammered every night so I don’t think it’s anything to worry about.

I don’t get why she’d want to, beer doesn’t taste THAT great! (Although on a really hot day…)

If it were me I’d be going for a virgin cocktail, yum!

To answer the question, I think it’s okay.

This is something you would need to discuss with your doctor.

ann.reid.9277:  Bellagiobride: Probably pretty useful if mom has an alcohol abuse problem, which is entirely possible. Doesn’t have to be full blown alcoholism. This could actually be helping her keep her baby safe.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists still advises that no amount of alcohol is “safe” during pregancy.

That said, my personal opinion is it’s probably fine if it’s one or two on occasion. Just a couple generations ago, women drank regularly throughout their pregnancies. Frequent and/or heavy drinking is responsible for most of the problems attributed to alcohol.

THAT said, is it so hard to just skip it? I was drunk 2-3 weekends every month before I got pregnant and was able to stop cold turkey the minute I found out I’d be drinking for 2. I figured why risk it?

THAT said, her doctor can give her better advice than you or an internet full of strangers.

BetchyBride:  MsGinkgo:  Agreed!

Bellagiobride:  It’s really none of your business. Don’t judge your friend for having a NON alcoholic beer (even if there is still a fraction of alcohol in it).  I really believe that it’s OK for her babe In that tiny amount.

I am in my second trimester (19 weeks) and have been shamed by people I know for THINKING about having half a glass of wine. It’s ridiculous. Just because a person is pregnant it doesn’t give others the right to pick apart what they put in their body. That decision is for the parents of the baby and the doc.

Let your friend be.

Bellagiobride:

It’s totally fine. There is absolutely not enough alcohol in a non-alcoholic beer to affect your fetus. It wouldn’t even register in your blood alcohol levels.

I drank non-alcoholic beers when I was pregnant because it was a nice way of partaking in ‘drinks’ at social gatherings. Even at home, I had a couple laying around because I enjoy the taste of beer with my dinner.

Having said that, some non-alc beers are horrible. The only ones that are decent are Erdinger and Maisel’s. If my only choice was O’Douls, I would definitely just have tea or a juice.

It’s fine. Don’t concern yourself with your friend’s behavior.

She can have 9 of those before it is the same amount of alcohol in a regular beer (not even a craft beer but a bud or something). It’s about the same amount of alcohol that’s in a coq au vin/chicken in wine sauce dinner after it’s cooked and the alcohol burns off. In other words…. It’s pretty safe unless she’s drinking a hundred of those things.

For those who think the girl is a closet alcoholic or “desperate to drink” because she wants a NA beer every now and then, honestly it tastes way better than diet coke, and maybe she likes it. Stop clutching yer pearls.

It’s fine.  She could even drink a real beer every day and be fine — this is a fairly common practice in many places outside the US. Here’s a link to an article written by an economist who has done extensive research on the issue.
