polkadots16:  We are also what they call a “mixed-marriage” I’m Protestant and he’s Catholic and we’re getting married in the Catholic Church. To answer your music question, from what I understand (and at the very least this is true for our church) it has to be sacred music and don’t really allow any secular music during the ceremony. I’m sure you could ask the priest and I don’t think it would be offensive, but just be prepared for the priest to deny your request.

Just an aside, have you checked with the priest about the ability to do a non-demonimational service in a Catholic Church? From what I understand, the only options for a Catholic wedding are the wedding with mass or wedding without mass, and even if you pick the wedding without mass, it is certainly not non-denominational. The only real difference is that there is no celebration of the Eucharist. I’ve actually never heard of a not Catholic wedding in a Catholic church. That being said, I was told we could have a priest from my church do some readings or say a prayer before the ceremony, etc. to incorporate the other faith tradition.

polkadots16: I have a Baptist background but used to go to a non-denominational church. What about some contemporary Christian music? Or even instrumental? Paul Cardall – has a lot of hyman/classic Christian songs that are instrumental. Appease the older crowd as they’ll recgonize the tunes but still classy and pretty for a modern wedding and no lyrics?

Were having a cello/violin duet of our favorite songs, some Christian, but most not. So, it’s a good halfway point for our religious family and friends and non-religious family and friends.

polkadots16:  What about the instrumental I suggested? I’d say that’s a good halfway point. 🙂 I have quite a few on my Spotify playlist and they’re just good background music too.

polkadots16:  No problem! Intrumental music should be no problem, I think we have some instrumental classical music as some of our choices. I’m sure you could ask the priest if you could stick to exclusively those 🙂 But like you said, contemporary music is probably a no-go.

polkadots16:  Oh, well I’m sure you could still do Canon in D! There’s plenty of time in the ceremony for more than one song! Like when they’re seating and things like that. Or as background music as the priest does a reading or something. Are you having live instruments play or just having an Ipod-type thing?
