I have always wanted to let my BMs choose their own dresses, especially since they have such different body types–one is a size 2 and one is a size 20…it’s hard to think of a style that would suit all of them well and that they would all feel comfortable in.
I was thinking of just telling them all to buy knee-length cocktail dresses in all black. I want to give enough criteria for them to look cohesive, but I don’t want to give too many guidelines as I feel like that might just defeat the purpose of letting them pick their own dresses. Has anyone done this or have any suggestions of how to go about it? Any photos would definitely be appreciated!

I don’t have any pictures of it yet (but maybe in about 80 days), but I’m doint exactly this. I have three bridesmaids. I’ve told each to find a LBD they love. Something between the knee and the calf. I have faith that each of them will find something beautiful and it will make for great pictures.

I think this is a great idea. You should have them follow some sort of guidelines though. I chose to pick one color and all my BMs ordered different styles with the same color. All the dresses are from the same place and they all have the same material so it really looks neat and fits together. You dont want the BMs to order from various places and get different kinds of material or it will not match.

My friend did this for her wedding. It looked cohesive enough! I think black cocktail, knee length is just fine!

I don’t have pictures yet, but we’re doing this. I have 7 maids and 1 Maid/Matron of Honor, so a one-style-suits-all dress was going to be insane to find. Many of the girls are in school, don’t have a lot of money, etc., and others have just gotten their degrees and are building work wardrobes. The girls who don’t have money to spend on new dresses all have LBDs in their closets, and if you don’t have one you should probably buy one anyway; they’re so versatile and suit many occasions.
Anyway, the ladies were all pleased, they’re having fun thinking about what they want, and they’ll all wind up with dresses they really WILL be able to wear again.
In order to keep the look fairly cohesive, I asked for solid black (no patterns), nothing too poofy (a-line or slim-cut), cocktail length (from about 3 inches above the knee to a couple inches below…originally I was looking for just above-the-knee but it wasn’t working for a couple of the girls). I’m really excited; I think it’ll look great. Especially since they’ll actually be smiling!
I didn’t want Maid/Matron of Honor to have to get a full-length just to stand out, so she’ll just get bigger flowers to hold and we’ll do a different shoe (we both love shoes). So the maids will all wear black pumps or black dressy flats, I have blue heels, and Maid/Matron of Honor will wear a punchy colored heel as well (probably pink or red) just for a little standout color.

It’s a great look and your bridesmaids will love you for it as they will all have a dress they can wear again.

Thanks so much for the feedback and advice everyone, it is really helpful!Keep it coming! 🙂
@julies1949: I love those photos because the girls have different fabrics but it still looks good together. I think that’s the look I’m going for–I’m afraid once if I impose too many guidelines that my BMs won’t be able to pick a dress they love at a price point of their choosing, which for me would be the point of letting them pick in the first place.
