Hey bees, any of you use a family member for e pics instead of an actual photographer?
Did you regret it? Did they turn out okay?
My sister who has a really nice camera said she can take pics of us and see how they turn out. I need to do my e pics right away before I get braces which will be sometime at the end of this month.
Post pics of your engagement session if they were done non professionally please!!!!

I got mine done professionally, but it was part of our wedding package. I would go for it, let your sis take them.
The way I look at it, e-pics are just professional caliber photos of yourselves in more casual clothes. Wedding photos can only be done once in a lifetime, there is no do-over. You can do professional couples photos anytime in your marriage. So if one day you have the funds to spend on couples photos, great! But I think if you like your sister’s work, (have you seen any?) you can let her give it a shot. But do it asap in case she isn’t so great!

@raisedonrobbery: A really nice camera has very little to do with the ability to take good photos. Putting the world’s nicest hammer in my hand does not make me an instant carpenter.
Personally I think the biggest advantage to having engagement photos done by your wedding photographer is the opportunity you will have to get know them and bond with them. That can be very valuable for establishing trust and rapport on your wedding day and can be the difference between good photos and great photos.

I think it depends what you want them for. If you just want one good shot to use for a save-the-date, then go for it. I’ve even seen couples do that with a self-timer!! If you’re looking for 20 amazing pictures to frame and use for a photo album, then your sister might not be able to deliver what you’re looking for.

My future sister-in-law took our engagement photos. We loved the pictures she took and used them on our save the dates. She’s taken lots of photography classes and has a very nice camera (one of those cannon ones w/the big lenses — fancy and such lol). We have no regrets. Our pro-photographer for the wedding is nice over emails, and was nice in person, so I’m not worried about not working w/them beforehand. We saved money this way! It’s special that his sister took our photos. Above is our save the date which has photos she took. If you would like I could post some more.
I’d say that you have to have skill to take good photos. A good eye is a must — if you have a family member who is good at taking photos then I say go for it! We have no regrets.
P.S. the blacked out part is from me, lol. I covered up where our wedding will be for internet posting =P
