Have you tried the mermaid style qipao/cheongsams?  I find them to be more flattering than the ones with the side slits that go straight up and down.  My Darling Husband is Chinese and I went with that style to wear for a portion of our wedding.

We celebrated his culture by having a tea ceremony, lion dancers and a martial arts performance.  Just some ideas if you’re wanting to visually incorporate your heritage into your wedding…

We had the cake decorated with the red Chinese knots and had a pipa player (I can’t believe I found one!) to honor my husband’s Taiwanese heritage but I don’t think my Mother-In-Law even noticed! I wore a qipao to the rehearsal dinner – it didn’t look great on me either but I had it tailored a bit so it worked ok!

janedoe00 :  There are strapless mermaid versions as well if you don’t like the high neck. smile

Indeed, the lion dancers were there during the reception.  Here’s a clip from my own wedding.  The footage wasn’t taken by my cinematographers but by my cousin, who was already on his merry way to being drunk so I apologize for the shakiness/blurriness yell

I’ve been looking at qipoas, as my Future Mother-In-Law is from Taiwan and we are doing a tea ceremony. Just wanted to throw out there that you might look into East Meets Dress. Found them on Etsy but they have their own website too. Their dresses are to die for!

janedoe00 :  I did the exact same thing you are contemplating — a non-qipao red dress with Chinese hair ornaments! It is plenty “Chinesey”! 😆

One more hehe. This one is actually my Weddingbee profile picture. My husband and I did the “lifting my red head covering with an old-fashioned scale handle” thing (称心如意)and it was a huge hit with the Chinese guests. Highlight of the reception they told me.

janedoe00 :  Thanks! I got it from a website called cozyladywear.com. Was a humbling experience entering my measurements for the custom order because…Asian sizing. Even their XXL is too small for me and I don’t think I’m that large lmao
