We are planning to have several tiers of cake for our wedding. (I don’t know how many yet. We live in Haiti where nothing is done more than a couple months in a advance. We will order our cake about 2 months before the wedding.) I don’t really want to pay for a cake stand. I was wondering if anyone else has seen cake tiers on unconventional platforms.
One thought I have is to use something that defines us… like books. I love books, and have lots of them. I thought about putting one tier of cake at table level and the other two (?) on stacks of books. Of course the cakes would be on a plate or something stable to support the entire underside.
Another idea I had was to use what was the right height and drape a piece of shiny red fabric over it. Then I would put the tier on top of that.
Any thoughts? Will either of these ideas look incredibly ridiculous?

Ohhh I like the fabric idea a lot. Both are good ideas though. The book one to me is very unique and I am liking the spaced cakes /different height the more I see it. I also did not want to pay for/ rent a cake stand so we made one. Ours was just a base of pale pink carnations, kind of looked like a 4th layer to the cake.

I love the books idea. Another one is maybe a picture frame on top of the book stack, or even just the glass from the picture frame, you could glue to the top book. Shiny doesn’t tend to photograph the same way we see it, so I’d stay away from that if there will be any chance of flash photography 🙂

I like the books idea too!
We did the different level boxes under the table cloth.. here’s a couple pics for a visual! I know being able to see something REALLY helped me. =)

Thanks so much for the ideas and support! I’m even more excited about this now. I was having a hard time imagining exactly what the draped fabric would look like. Thanks for the pictures, @amnystik:!
