I just got engaged yesterday (hi!). Since the gears were obviously turning before the …absolutely freaking gorgeous ring found its way to my finger –
– I’ve already been thinking about some potential alternatives to the whole ‘sit down, have a dinner of many courses’ strategy. Our families and friends are pretty easy-going, and I’d much rather have the whole thing just be an informal, fun party with food everywhere, drinks, dancing and occassional pauses for some necessary speeches. Is there a name for this kind of reception? Is anyone planning anything like this, or have thought about it and can throw me some pros and cons? Basically the whole thing would just be a variety of (filling, plentiful, delicious) appetizers. I’m not even aiming for this as a cheaper alternative to dinners, I could see it being more expensive even. I just kinda like the flow of it better. (Or at least how I imagine it.)
Thanks in advance!

@araneidae: Yes, a lot of people around here have planned their weddings like that! Some people have some lounge type furniture, some seating, but not for a formal dinner. Congratulations and Welcome! 🙂

I’ve heard this kind of reception called “South Beach style” by other posters. I’d say the only thing you need to worry about is making sure your elderly guests have reserved seating and that everything is easy to eat while standing.

We are having a roasted pig instead of the standard 4 course plated meal. The carving will take place in the reception venue and people can come get their meat. The sides will be on the table for them.
My friend had an evening coctail reception with yummy hors deurves and a roast beef station. it was a hit and there was seating for those who needed it. There was so much food to so no one went hungry.

We are having a food truck cater our wedding – we love food trucks and think it will be a fun addition to our celebration. We are hiring a couple servers to wait on the folks who can’t walk very well, but everyone else will walk up to the truck and “order” whatever they want!
