My engagement ring is with white topaz, and I agree it’s not as sparkly as a diamond but the cut is really good, which really gives the stone dept and a fair amount of sparkle. So if you want a nice white stone and you don’t want to spend too much, my suggestion would be to hunt down a nicely cut white topaz in good quality and see if it suits you. 🙂

Look for smaller stones.  All of the colourless stones that look similar to diamond (CZ, topaz, sapphire, Moissanite, Asha, etc) are going to show their differences more the larger you go.

Have you looked at pear moissanites? 3ct will still be $1000 or more though, so I’m not sure what your price range is.

Anything in that size is not going to look like a diamond. Even diamonds in that size can look “fake.” Presumably all of your friends and family know your financial situation and know that you can’t afford a 2-3 carat diamond.

cmbr:  +1. anything that large is going to look fake, if it isn’t a diamond. you don’t seem like you’re in any financial situation to buy a ring that large, so people will know it’s not real.

i don’t see any problem with your current ring. why not keep that?
