- Wedding: June 2010
My fiancee and I recently got engaged and have just started our wedding planning. I have been really struggling with the price tag weddings generally cost, and the crisis this week in Haiti has only intensified my discomfort. It’s not that we and our very generous parents can’t afford a $15,000 wedding, it’s that I don’t want anyone to spend that kind of money on a single event, even one this important, when there is so much need and suffering in the world. I thought about cancelling the wedding this weekend, eloping, and making a substantial donation to charity. But I do think I would be sad to miss celebrating with all of my loved ones. Instead, I think we are going to cut our wedding budget substantially and make an effort to use only nonprofit vendors where our money will support causes we believe in. I’m a little worried about how others will react to this and worried that it will be difficult to pull off. Does anyone have any words of wisdom or suggestions for nonprofit vendors? Thanks!
