We are getting married at Camp Bird in Crivitz, Wi on September 10th 2011.  It is a Marinette County youth camp that myself and most of my friends/family went to for 1 week in 6th-8th grade.  It is creating some challenges, but I am looking forward to the fun, nostalgic feeling of being back there.  We rented the entire camp Fri-Sunday, so it will be very private, and it is quite affordable.  Those who choose to can rent the cabins for the weekend, they don’t all have bathrooms, but they are close by.  The ceremony will be on the beach of Sand Lake (part of the camp) and the reception will follow in the Recreation Hall.

Before I had settled on my Destination Wedding, I had thoughts of a wedding at one of the resorts in Northern Wisconsin. I thought that we’d block out the whole resort so all the guests and get together to rent cabins and then have the ceremony right on the lake with officiant, Dear Fiance, and I standing at the end of a fishing dock and then have a campfire hang out reception with smores and hot dogs on sticks and stuff.

the specific resort that I had in mind was this one: http://shadyoaksresortsiren.com/

don’t know if this helps you or not…

I don’t know how “northern” you’re thinking but I have contemplated having mine at Lake Superior (border of the U.P) at one of the beaches. I decided not to for these reasons; 1)it can get really cold by the lake. I’ve driven from the lake into town (about 15 min drive) and the temperature has risen almost 20 degrees between the two places! 2) it could potentially be super windy 3) black flies on our beaches are nasty, and I am afraid they could be out.

On the other hand, I think lakes are GORGEOUS and you get some great pictures and have a beautiful backdrop. And, it very well may be the case that the lake you have in mind does not have any of those issues! If you’re not familiar with the particular lake I would try to go there around your date this fall to see what it is like, or ask around!

EDIT: I noticed you said Labor day weekend. This is a VERY busy weekend for lakes in northern wisconsin. You should also think about how many people will be there if the weather is nice. The lake may be packed! So just make sure this wouldn’t bother you if there were tons of random families around! Or check and see if there is a somewhat private/secluded area you could use.

I am so jealous, my FI’s family has a cabin in Manitowish Waters, WI and we really wanted to get married there.  Unfotunatly it was not meant to be, but the northwoods are beautiful!  Let me know if you need some suggestions for areas around there and I would be happy to help!

I would agree that Labor Day weekend is super busy on any lake in WI. (we have a cottage on a lake by Madison), so I would say to pick something sooner than later and then book as soon as they’ll let you.  Not sure what your budget will be, but prices will be slightly higher that weekend as well – not that i’m suggesting you don’t do it though!  It also depends on how “up north” you’re talking…
