A year and a half away? No, you’re not crazy.  Now is the time to start gathering inspiration, but you have the luxury of time, which means you can window shop, explore and build a vision before you commit any cash to it.  I didn’t buy anything except a handful of wedding magazines and a cake topper until six months before our date!

i think you are fine….the only thing you might want to look into booking sooner than later would be your wedding venue. i know the hot spots out here book up over a year in advance, especially depending on the time of year…other than that, i would also wait a little while on your dress….maybe wait until you are a year out? i ordered my dress back in October, was told it would take 4-6 months, and it arrived here (from Australia no less haha) in February!

You’re fine!  I agree with everyone on looking for a venue.  If there’s one piece of advice that I’ve heard over and over again, it’s don’t rush into buying wedding stuff, especially your dress.  I am 14 months away from our wedding date.  We booked the venue 18 months out.  And I don’t plan on dress shopping until 9-10 months before, because I know I will change my mind!

Don’t worry!

I think you’re fine, too.  We’re August or September 2011 and, again… nothing.  We made a tentative guest list that is probably wildly inaccurate and I went dress shopping once, mostly as a way to try to get myself psyched up to plan (it didn’t work).

I agree that the first thing to do is venue (and approx # of people since that affects it).  I will not buy a dress without booking a venue, because I think that could affect the formality of the wedding and thus what I wear.  I don’t think you can really plan much without having a venue.  I do get a few comments asking if we’ve set a date, etc, but whatever.  I figure people are more making conversation than shocked I haven’t planned anything.

I agree about the venue, both other than that, you are so fine!  I did a lot of planning early for my own piece of mind, but you really don’t have to!

I’m less than 10 months out and I have not purchased an item. We have a venue and a photog, but i haven’t tried on a dress or purchased one thing.

Oh my goodness… you are just fine.  Maybe pick a venue and get it booked, but other then that, you have plenty of time.  If you start now, you will just get burned out on it, or worse, make a ton of decisions and then change your mind in 6 months.  Plus, dress styles change so much- there will be at least two new seasons of dresses that come out before you really need to purchase, plus, any dresses that you like NOW will be past seasons and you might be able to get them cheaper.

For now, relax, and enjoy being engaged!

agreed! i think you are fine! i’m getting married the weekend before you and the only things i have in order are the church and reception venue. other than that, NOTHING. i think this fall is when i will nail down the photog, caterer, and florist.. then decide on a dress.

i know i’m the type to change my mind on decisions so i like to really think about it before i make my move… with 1.5 year to go, i def have that luxury and i love it 😀

@littlecat date twins! I booked wedding venue and reception since they are at the same place. Bought my dress and shoes bc my shoes were on super sale! But I still need to find photo DJ and official bridesmaid dresses

@goodie – date twins!  so exciting!!  The only thing I have booked is my venue – and then I’m putting everything off until August.  I’m taking the bar this summer, and although I WISH I could be planning…I really should be studying.  So I won’t be buying or booking anything else (except maybe the church) until late summer/fall.  So I think you’re fine!  Good luck with everything, I’m so excited for all the planning to come!!

Don’t worry about the dress or other things that you’ll buy eventually. A year and a half is actually a good time to start booking your venue, caterer, and photographer. The best places often book over a year in advance.
