I’m not trying to tell you something you dont know, or insult anyones intelligence, so please dont think that.
I wanted a Luci Dibella Baby Doll dress, and looking at Chinese dressmakers they were going to charge me £150 which is a great price for a £2,000 gown, but i have read so many reviews, a lot of them bad, and didnt want to chance my £150 …..
So i popped into the local bridal shop and spoke to the owner, who makes dresses as well as selling them.
At first we looked at the dress and she said she could make it no problem, then we had an idea which would mean less work for her, so making it less cost for me, as i hadnt got as much to pay her for her work.
We looked at dresses with essentially the same style, and she ordered me an ALEXIA bridesmaid dress, she will remove the ruching around the waist and the sash, and add the vintage lace in its place.she is also adding little lace straps.
ALEXIA dress £170
Alterations (which include my fitting alterations too) £30
here is the dress i wanted…Luci Dibella Baby Doll
And here is the dress she ordered to alter for me, my dress has been ordered in Champagne. An Alexia bridesmaid dress.
So although this can actually be considered a replica, I know for a fact its very well made, and at least i am spending money locally, and to be honest, this is only costing £50 more than getting it from China, and i get to have all my alterations done for that price too.
Its maybe something some of you have not thought of, but i am sure if you ask a local seamstress, it may surpise you how little it could cost, and no devastation when you get that Chinese dress home and its not what you dreamed of.
I know its maybe easier with my dress as its a fairly simple design, and maybe a big poofy dress might be more expensive going to the local dressmaker, but its worth asking first before spending money in China.
I have nothing agaisnt China, but in MY mind, if you need to think of ordering from China for your dress, its maybe because you cant afford the real thing, and by the same token, maybe you also cant afford to lose that money if you are not happy with it when it arrives. For me i didnt want to risk the money, however low cost it appeared to be.
I have photographed many weddings where the bride bought her dress from China and they have been absolutely beautiful, but i am not a lucky person!
