I’m having about 35 guests for a cocktail style 3-hour reception in New Orleans.
I just found out that they only provide seating for 20 people. I can rent extra high top tables so at least those guests standing can have a place to sit their plate and drink. I asked for extra chairs and they do not allow any because it’s too small of a space.
Do you think it will be a big issue? About half the guests are under 30 and we only have one elderly guest there. I’m already telling everyone to wear comfortable shoes regardless because after the reception we will be doing a second line.

Should be fine. Just reseve seating for anybody who may need it (elderly). I went to a wedding like this recently and almost everybody was standing and chatting.

It doesn’t sound like it will be a problem. If you reserve seating like PP said you should be ok. 🙂

Are you having entertainment during the reception? For me, if you were having a band/dj during the reception, I wouldn’t mind standing at a cocktail table to eat and then getting out on the dance floor.
However, if there wasn’t a dance floor, and we were just eating/mingling, I would want a seat for everyone.
PS- I LOVE second lines! I think it is such a cool way to celebrate and get everyone into the action!!

As long as you do a cocktail style reception it will be fine. It would be awkward to eat a full course meal standing up, but appetizers should be fine. As long as you have seats for the elderly and kids, which it sounds like you do, that’s fine.

I have been to events where people are standing for an hour or so; no problem.
BUT, your reception is 3 hours…..personally I think that is too long to stand & things would get boring after standing for 2 hours.
Since more chairs, isn’t an option, could you cut your reception down to 2 hours?
Also, you indicated there are chairs for 20, that means 15 people will be standing – I feel like that is awkward to have half your guests sitting and the other half standing. If anything, I would only put out like 5 chairs for those that are older & have everyone else stand.

I’ll will be having a singing pianist since the space doesn’t fit bands. I’m hoping for this kind of vibe since it’s an intimate wedding:
