- Wedding: April 2013
I’ve been engaged for a little less than a year, but SO and I finally, FINALLY set a wedding date and reserved a venue. I guess things are conducted a little differently here in Korea, with families on both sides becoming highly involved. After a whirldwind of events, we FINALLY managed to sit down both sets of parents and have the traditional sang-gyun-rae, or, as SO and I called it “the 6 party talk”. But we have finally gotten our wedding rolling, and I am so excited!
Here’s my ring-it’s quite small, but SO picked it out and paid for it himeslf in a country where the groom’s parents normally pay for the ring. (Korea is one of few places where a “dowry” and “bride price” are still exchanged. They don’t call it that exactly, but when 100K are exchanged between families, I don’t know what else it cuold be called). As he put it on my finger, he told me about how he spent months picking out a setting, and then looking at dozens of diamonds before finding the perfect one. He still looks at it a little sadly, telling me that he wishes it was bigger, but I know that its his heart that he slid on. While the wedding traditions here are probably dissimilar to those in Western nations, I’m excited to look at wedding dresses and offer advice to anyone marrying into a Korean family =)
