After my first trial, I felt gross. I couldn’t wait for the hair to come down and to get home to take off the makeup. The hair wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t for me–but the makeup, oh the makeup! It made me look older and tired and it was done in a way that didn’t take my facial structure or features into account. It sucked, especially since I spent $150 for nothing.. I then did another hair trial (and would have done more if I hadn’t liked the results) and decided to do my own makeup.

You should be happy with the hair/makeup–it’s the first thing that gets done and if you’re not happy with it, it sets a bad tone for the rest of the day. Remember, everyone will be looking at you and you need to feel like your best!

Don’t be down – – Did you go to your appt w/ inspiration pictures?  Sometimes if you don’t have pictures and you’re trying to guide your artist by verbally explaining your vision it doesn’t always come to fruition exactly the way you see it in your mind.  Lets see some inspiration pix of hair + make up you like…I def think you should feel comfortable sharing what you do and don’t like. Maybe you can let her know what you’re crazy about and what you’d like to try again!?!?!?

Hi, I read your post and can relate. My first make up trial did not go the way I hoped as well. Here are a few suggestions I am doing: 1. Look at some local photographers blogs and see if you see brides with makeup you do like and try to get the name of that artist.

2. Ask friends or even strangers whom make up you like. I have gotten a good deal of referrals that way. Ladies that wear makeup everyday usually have good advice concerning.

3. Ask your photographer for some referrals. They work with MUA all the time. Mine referred me to some.

4. Lastly let them know before they begin how you feel, and your bad experiences. They should be willing to take their time and change or add anything you don’t like while they are doing it.  Good luck!

I didn’t like any of my makeup trials, the hair would come out pretty good, but the makeup always looked funny.  I ended up doing my own, even lost my deposit, after the MUA tried two times to do it normal….she just made all her brides look exactly the same and it was too much makeup on me so I did it myself and didn’t need the stress on my day, of worrying about how I would end up looking.  I did research on YOU TUBE and was very pleased with my makeup job! If in doubt and you are running out of funds like I was, do it yourself!

If you really prefer the way you do your make-up, it’s not against the bridal rules to do it yourself. I am, because I can’t stand the way other people try to do it!

@ LadyJenn: It’s funny…I was just looking at your wedding photos on another post and considering using one as “inspiration” pic for my MUA. You did a beautiful job — I definitely assumed it was professionally done — and you were a stunning bride!

Oh wow thank you!  I’m telling you start looking up you tube videos for wedding makeup…I got so many tips that way, and Kandee is the best!  Even some younger girls on you tube totally are gorgeous and show you exactly how to get their look, it was so fun watching. I actually would take my laptop into the bathroom to practice doing what they suggested, especially with the eye makeup!

Give your MUA a ring and tell her what you feel. Maybe she’ll give you a free makeover given you will book with her or give you a discounted rate in the end?

I’m the same way…when pros do my make up, I hate it everytime! it’s almost like they are trying to make me look like a clown or something! i’m a simple girl, i don’t need and inch of makeup!

I’ll be doing my own.

I JUST got back from my hair/makeup trial. It looks really good in the pictures but in real life, my skin looks worse with makeup than without.  I have really great skin naturally, no wrinkles, no pimples, just clear skin.  But the foundation made me look like I have bumps and wrinkles!

I’m at a lost because in the pics, my skin looks flawless.  Anyone else have this problem?
