Two things:

– the more you stress out, the longer you won’t get your period – so it absolutely could be the stress thats making you late.

– the pregnancy hormone is most concentrated in your first morning pee.  If thats when you took the test, and it was a clear negative, its very unlikely that you’re preggers.

@msnightowl: I don’t think so….only because soooo many things can cause AF to be late. One time I was convinced I was pregnant….Had all the symptoms including the missed period. But took the test (like 5 of them) and everything was negative all week long. That was 11 months ago…I woulda had a baby by now:) Turns out, AF was just being her usual unpredictable self.

I am having the SAME thing minus the stress. I am going to the doc tomorrow to confirm or deny once and for all though. Best of luck.

I’ve only ever been late once in my life…and I skipped it entirely for the month! POAS about 4 or 5 times. But the stress is what did it. I’d say try to relax (as best you can), give it a little bit, call your Dr if you’d like, and POAS for your first pee in the morning. The Dr will tell you whether they think you should come in, and they can do some simple tests to help ease your mind.

Really, though, stress can make your period just skip, even after 10+ years of clockwork. Best of luck to you!!

ETA- Here’s a thread I made about ‘uh oh’ tests that got a lot of responses and stories.

With my second, I was pretty sure I was pregnant, my body just felt that way.  I kept doing home pregnancy tests, I lost count of how many I did, it was seriously that many.  And they kept coming up negative.  My period never came, and I kept testing and testing and testing.  I was 9 weeks pregnant by the time I finally got a postive test.  I went to the Dr and said that I thought I was about 3 to 5 weeks tops.  He did a blood test, freaked out by the results and sent me for an ultrasound right away.  That confirmed that yes I indeed was getting negative results right up to 9 weeks.

Yes stress can cause a late period, so can ill health.  But I don’t want to scare you, the symptoms you are describing are the exact same ones of my first pregnany.  Come on period, why do I feel like my body is mid period, but there is nothing.  UMMM, I was pregnant, thats why.

Save yourself the stress, and go and see a Dr.  Simple blood test will ease your mind.

We weren’t trying, but we weren’t taking measures to prevent it either.

And actually at the time, we werent that “busy” either.  Fiance was away a lot at the time, and it was a long time between drinks.

@Firie: haha.

I always take at LEAST three tests to be sure it’s negative. Might be crazy but who knows. =) Rather be safe than sorry!

Actually, stress can only delay your period to a certain point. It doesn’t delay your period directly, but if you are stressed around the time you ovulate (approximately 11-14 days before you usually get your period), stress can push the ovulation back, or make you skip it entirely. Once you ovulate, you will get your period at the end of your luteal phase (the time after ovulation) which is always the same duration every month, there’s no way to stop it, unless of course you are pregnant. Look back to the time you might have ovulated and try to remember if anything particularly stressful happened. My guess is something delayed or prevented ovulation.

@msnightowl:  Stress actually can’t delay your period. It has no effect on when your period decides to come or not come. It can, however, delay your ovulation.

If your period is truly that late, I would definitely keep testing. My only pregnancy symptom was period cramps, and it sounds like you are having those. Some people don’t find out until they get a blood test. Good luck!!!
