I thought maybe my life was just going to be simple for a while. Everything was going so darn smoothly, I should have known I’d have the Monday of all Mondays to knock me a good one out of my cloud and back to this very real place.
It started off normal, got up had coffee, drove across town for an 1130 meeting, home by 1230, my Dad came over for lunch and a visit, and everything was great. Then the phone rings, its my step dad. My Mom’s car broke down an hour out of town (on her way to drive her client another 2 1/2 hours further) So I got in my car and drove to pick her up and drive her to their destination. It seemed fine except my car was being the most gutless car EVER (which is uncharacteristic for a diesel vw) We were driving up a HUGE hill (think mountainous road, 8%grade) so we chalked it up to the fact that we were literally driving up the biggest hill it had EVER driven up (and at 435,000 km’s on the car that seemed perfectly reasonable, although I wasn’t convinced because she’s the best car EVER) When we got back to where broken car was, my step-dad was there just finishing up fixing it. We went into a restaurant for a bite to eat (it’s 8 pm now and we’re all starving) we’re getting ready to hit the highway again and as I’m aout to pull away, everyone restored to their original vehicles, my Mom mkes a grim face and waves me over and so I pull back into the parking spot and she’s says something vague about the pony being attacked by a bear and my step-dad’s on the phone with the neighbours and there’s police and co’s and people and they’re still just trying to scare the bear away. Meanwhile, we’re hearing this over the phone and we’re all a god hour away.
So we take off and my car continues to be a gutless piece and then my friggin check engine light comes on. So I called my Mom (they were still behind me) and my step dad traded me, I drove the car that was fixed and he drove mine to see if he could figure it out. He concluded its something electrical causing my car to go into “limp home mode” (ugh. new cars are too fancy for me!) And that while it’ll still drive like a gutless piece, its because is telling itself too, not because its actually going to quit. A small cnsolation at least. we have bigger problems anyways.
Fifty minutes later (yeah, I sped as much as my gutless car would let me, don’t judge) I got home to some wonderful neighbours who took the pony (and our horse) over to their barn and set up a straw bed and called the vet and did everything he suggested until we got their. They were so wonderful, we cannot thank them enough (I see wine and a card in their future)
We got the whole story, turns out the most persistent bear ever tried to eat our pony, in broad daylight. And by the looks of her, it would have succeeded if it weren’t for the many wonderful people who intervened. Half a dozen cars stopped and were honking, someone called the police who called the co’s, my neighbours heard the commotion and came over, their two young men jumped into our field and literally chased the bar away with garden hoes (my parents have the best neighbours ever) The bear kept coming back despite being shot several times. I guess someone else ended up getting a gun (police? neighbours? Who knows, we missed the whole thing) and about a dozen shots later the bear finally went down)
The scariest part is this isn’t way out in the bush. It’s out in the country a bit but we have a bus stop up the street where children walk to their bus is broad daylight. People are out and aout in that area all the time. The bear was clearly not that afraid of people either.
After all this, I’m way too tired for life and its going to be a long road to recovery for the pony (and some miserable months of wound tending for us) I feel so slammed back to reality and put in my place, its kinda lame. Why can’t things just go smoothly without all these darn ruts and bumps?!
Just a vent mostly, and a call for good thoughts for my dear pony, some prayers for quick healing for her. It frustrates me so much to watch innocent animals get mauled! Its pretty heart wrenching and the sooner she heals, the sooner she can get back to being the fun loving glorified lawn ornament we know so well!
Thanks bees 🙂
