I don’t know exactly what this all means, but I get the drift, and I can understand why it’s scary. I hope the two weeks go by as quickly as can be expected. You are in my prayers.

The NT scan can give a lot of false positives, one slightly off measurement by the tech and you can have a “troubling result”, also things can be measuring fine and things can still end up being wrong… Try not to stress about it too much until you know what you are dealing with!  I know that’s easier said than done, I’m thinking about you and sending good vibes your way!

1112bride:  This has happened to SO many mamas on another baby board I’m a member of (babycentre – the Australian one). The vast majority of women in the group came back clear after the CVS… Is it an option for you to have the harmony test (blood test that comes back with a 99% accurate answer, and can tell you baby’s gender if you want)?

Just want to say please don’t stress too much (easier said than done believe me I know) 🙂

I’m so sorry you’re going through this – it must be really scary! Keep in mind that 3.1 is actually not that far outside of the normal range – I think some doctors consider up to 3 or even 3.5 normal – and that there are a lot more false positives than true positives with these screening tests. One of my friends just had a similar scare – her NT and blood test results came back with something like a 1 in 70 chance of Down’s syndrome, and after the CVS, they found out that it was a false positive and their baby boy is chromosomally normal. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you, but remember that the odds are still in your favor!

i understand where you’re coming from. At our 20 week morphology scan the doctor said there was probably something wrong with our baby because she was measuring so small. He recommended an amnio be performed then and there. Just writing this actually brings tears to my eyes! It’s still very raw. The results were made up of a micro-array and the usual test for downs, trisomy 13 &18. Everything came back negative. We still have no idea why she is small, but at least we can rule out a genetic or chromosomal problem (i think). And she continues to grow so we’re relaxed now and i refused to have further repeat morphology scans (we had one) until week 28. I’m now on the cusp of 26 weeks and she moves around like a ninja in there and honestly that is so reassuring.

in reference to your situation, i am certain my OB said a result under 3mm on the nuchal fold would not warrant further testing. Yours is only slightly above that. There are tests which will rule out downs but I’m not sure whether they can be done without amniocentisis. Make sure you are fully informed by your OB and don’t hesitate to get a second opinion if you want one.

our results also took about 2 weeks, just dreadful. I totally get the worry. I’ve my fingers crossed this is a false alarm. I’m sure everything will work out 🙂 it helped me that i actually traveled interstate for business while i was in that 2 week hell hole as i could focus on something new and different. Made the time go faster. Also just keep busy in general. Schedule lots of errands, catch ups with friends and family. Wear yourself out during the day so you sleep well.

1112bride:  I can sympathize! Our NT measurement was 3.5, which is the beginning of most abnormal ranges. I had the harmony test done at the same time, so we waited for those results before deciding to do the CVS. After 8 agonizing days (And a holiday weekend) we finally got the all clear.

I sincerely hope the same for you! It was such a stressful situation for me, and the waiting made me so sad. I wanted to bond with my baby and my pregnancy but felt like I couldn’t until I knew what was going on.

Even though our harmony test came back fine, they did recommend we have a fetal echocardiogram done at 16w. Since the NT measurement can also be an indication of heart defects. We had that done at 16w and again at 20w, and got the all clear. The bonus was that we got to see our baby 2 more times!

Hang in there! Keeping fingers crossed for you.
