Nursery trends: We're not doing the rocking chair anymore?

We plan to do a big recliner or big chair with ottoman both of which glide. I don’t find rocking chairs comfortable, they hurt my spine and the bones on my back. Plus we’ll be able to move the big chair into our main living area once it’s done in the nursery.

I didn’t bother with a chair at all until my son was like 8 months old. When he was a baby he didn’t like sitting, he wanted me to stand and rock him to sleep. Once he got older, I used a chair for stories and to let him nap on me. Big fluffy ones are more comfortable and versatile since you can use them in another room later. I have one that looks like a club chair but reclines. I don’t think it has anything to do with style and everything to do with comfort and the ability to manufacture that type of chair.

I love rocking chairs but there there was no way I’d comfortably sit in that in a nursery. We have a glider and it is SO comfortable to sit in for long periods of time.

I have a traditional rocking chair that I bought from Cracker Barrel. My daughter is 17 now and I move that ugly ass chair from room to room. Nobody wants to sit in it because it isn’t comfortable and it’s too nice to discard. They really don’t have much purpose other than being a nice nostalgic touch.

We got a glider (fabric chair with ottoman).  Next time I’d get a recliner that rocks so that I can lean back a bit, but otherwise I love it.  It rocks and swivels and is super comfortable.  I would have gotten a bigger one so it was easier to snuggle with my son when he got older.  An oversized 1.5 person glider would have been good.

I had a rocking chair with my first, and it was padded well, so it was comfy.  But it moved.  Like whenever you rocked it would move back gradually, which was just annoying.  Gliders are just better imo.

Yes, gliders have replaced traditional wooden rockers for the nursery.  As everyone has said, they’re much more comfortable and usually take up less space in the room.  I’ve seen many people get a neutral color and move it to another room when it’s no longer needed.  I think they’re great.  We plan on getting one.

We have my husband’s great grandmother’s rocking chair that she rocked his mom in.  I’m pregnant w/ our 1st, so I can speak of it yet.  I threw a sheepskin rug over it to make it more comfy, but it does creek a bit.  I guess we’ll find out when little one arrives if we’ll use it or need to get a glider.

I don’t think gliders have replaced traditional rockers. They are just another option for new parents!

We are personally using a wooden rocker:

It’s a glider.  Although, I never used that or the rocker I had.  I never nursed either of my babies in their rooms.  Always in my bed or on the couch.

HaaaveYouMetTed :  My Mother-In-Law made the cushion for us… not very helpful I know! Unless you or someone you know sews? I picked out the fabric at Fabricland, and we made the seat extra cushy! This chair was the only one that my husband could comfortably sit in. Including the gliders lol! He is a very tall and broad former pro-football player. Poor guy doesn’t fit into many things lol!

My mom asked me this question she was confused, granted she is 67 yrs old and hasnt had a baby in over 30 years or been around babies until recently lol. Honestly I cant even find old style rocking chairs in the stores anymore, they are all gliders or recliners. Maybe second hand shops may have them…but the gliders are way more comfortable I think.

courtneysokal :  Dang I was afraid you were going to say that lol my Mother-In-Law sews too and actually gifted us the rocking chair, so I think I’m going to ask her! She lives about 16 hours away so I was trying to avoid having her needing to ship it but I can’t find anything that fit just right!
