Craiglist might be a good place to start.  I think I heard Petfinder.com has classified-type listings.  Also, some rescues will do a courtesy posting of an animal on their website or Petfinder for you, (the pet remainds in your physical possession and is not technically a part of their rescue, but they will forward interested parties your way).  This is probably the safest route.

Don’t give him away for free…that attracts the loonies.  I would check out the adoption applications of local rescues and see what the requirements of their adoptive families are, then select at least a few questions you feel are important to ask prospective owners.  This also helps cut back on the loonies.

Also, try contacting some of the vets in your area. They may know of a place that will take the kitty in.

Check petfinder.com to see if there are any no-kill cat rescues in your area. You could contact them as well to see if they would help. Also ask your vet’s office, sometimes they will help re-home animals.

First you feed him and love him!!

At my apartments (there are only four units) we’ve been taking turns caring for a kitty named Theo for a couple years now. A previous tenant left him, but he’s adjusted to having multiple “owners.” We take him to the vet once a year, feed him and cuddle him. He lives outside mostly now, but he comes inside when it’s cold.

Just kidnap him and hide him out in your apartment.  Pretend you gave it to another owner. 😉 hahah
