I work in mental health. Abilify is a pretty heavy duty medication for use in plain old depression. There are antidepressants other than Effexor that could be better for you, and I have one in mind. But there’s no way of knowing if the medication will work until you try. Plus you might have other medical conditions that would make the medication choices impossible for anyone to safely make on this forum. Without a physical exam, full history and a full medical workup, discussing all this is generally not a good idea online. Your best bet would be to find a psychiatrist who can work with you on some of these residual symptoms you have. For as much as I love primary care providers, their training in psychotropic medications is usually lacking at best. Good luck!

Not your fault for reading anything wrong. They don’t market it as an antipsychotic, but technically that is what it’s usually used for. Tons of meds out there, and pharmaceutical companies are getting more and more clever in their ads to carve out nitches for themselves. Wish they’d put that advertising money into making more novel medications which we have a huge need for. But anyway, everyone should be wary of what you hear on TV with regards to any medication. It’s no different than advertising for any other product and can be somewhat deceiving.
