I am a pianist, violinist, and flutist, self taught!

I started when I was 12, and then finally took classes at age 19 for piano.  My teacher said I was almost college level.

I did quit lessons, ($40 an hour once a week) when I got laid off of work.  But I still LOVE to play.

I’m currently teaching myself violin.

My recommendation is even if you don’t go that far, start with a keyboard and some beginner books to learn how to read music. Then go to your instrument of choice.  If you know the basics of piano, you can truly play ANY instrument! ๐Ÿ™‚

Learn an instrument, it helps you in SO many ways.  It’s relaxing, it helps your studies (math, etc.) and gets your mind involved and into quick problem solving. It’s also a great conversation starter, and it’s something that if your kids are ever interested in music you can teach them yourself.  The reasons to play are endless. ๐Ÿ™‚

ETA: you can learn an instrument at any age.  Don’t let that hold you back.  I knew a lady who was in her 60s when she started so she could play in her church.  She plays beautifully!

I used to play the flute….I played in middle school and highschool. And I’ve played the guitar some. I’d love to learn more guitar. I say go for it! And I believe Mrs. Pencils actually received a cello from Mr. Pencils so that she could learn a new instrument. What do you want to learn?

I play guitar and french horn although I prob could no longer play the french horn as I haven’t touched it in almost 20 years.  I can play alittle violin poorly and alittle steel guitar very poorly (both learned as an adult).  But I am wicked accurate on a sound board even though it isn’t an instrument.

I play the piano. Started when I was six, took lessons for years up until Grade 9 of the Royal Conservatory program and then stopped the lessons because they were making me hate playing. Once I was able to play on my own terms, I began to love it again, and now I compose my own music.

Fun story: my mom, who always wanted to learn to play the piano, used to sit in on my lessons and learn as much as she could, but of course she never got to actually play during the lessons. At the age of 40, through patience and sheer determination, she taught herself one of my recital pieces on our piano at home, and can still play it perfectly to this day. It’s the only thing she ever learned to play besides Heart and Soul or Chopsticks, but she’s never forgotten it.

Another flute player here. I’ve played since I was eleven, but have barely practiced over the last year or so because since leaving school there is less motivation (no recitals, etc, to go to). I really want to get back into it though, otherwise all that learning will seem like such a waste!

I used to play the tenor saxophone and the clarinet.  I started when I was 9 and stopped when I was 18.  I didn’t really have a passion for it anymore.

I played the violin for a few years way back when.  I miss it sometimes.  I’d love to learn the piano and guitar now though.
