Boxerlover24:  I had never heard of it either! I guess it helps with the strength of the hair? At any rate, it smells AMAZING and has made my hair feel really soft.

Also, Living Proof has a product (can’t remember the name) that you put in your hair before shampooing and it helps keep the color from bleeding at all.

thistle89:  Yes Balayage is handpainted highlights although I know some other stylists who feel safer placing the painted hair into foils while it develops.

Balayage is sunkissed natural looking hair colour – think being in the sun as a kid and your hair would develop natural highlights that weren’t uniform.

Ombre/Dip dye is also handpainted.

Boxerlover24:  I think it would look great on you and look really natural/subtle because of your natural colour which I love btw!

I have balayage and I LOVE it! I love that it’s easy to maintain too!

Ask your stylist to use Olaplex if you’re planning on bleaching your hair in order to protect your hair from damage!

I’ve been thinking about getting this done myself. Can anyone recommend someone in the NYC area? Thanks 🙂

Most of the inspiration pics (and your pics here) are on wavy styled hair. My hair takes a curl quite well, but I just don’t have time for styling my hair at the moment being a new mum. So most of the time I just straighten it. So does anyone here have it on straight hair? I would be going for quite a natural look, with the highlights being not too much lighter than my natural colour.

In almost ever photo of balayage before and after, it looks as though the hair has been curled. Is it actually possible to perm AND dye your hair the same day? Aren’t both really damaging on hair?

I have dead straight black hair and would love wavy, brown balayage…just not sure how my hair would handle it.

I had this done in June last year and will be having it done again next month. I haven’t had any colouring inbetween and it looks fine. It is one of those colours which doesn’t ever look grown out (like highlights would) so it’s perfect for me as I hardly ever go to the hairdressers and don’t like using chemicals on my hair too often. It also looks so subtle, a bit like hair would if you were in the sun a lot.

It cost about the same as a full head of highlights and took the same amount of time.

I haven’t done anything to maintain it, I use ordinary shampoo & conditioner (not special colour ones) and it still looks great. The main reason I’m having it done again next month is that most of the blonde has reached the bottom of my long hair and I want more blonde coverage again.

ETA: I have very straight long hair and it suits. I think stylists often curl hair after doing this colour as the curls accentuate the colour, however it will look equally as nice on straight hair.

rainandfire: I have it and I’m sure I have pictures of my hair straight and balayaged (though I do usually wear it wavy). I’ll upload later if I find one! I personally like the look better on my wavy/curled hair, but I also am not big on my hair when it’s straightened and usually only straighten it when I haven’t washed it in 4/5 days so it doesn’t look it’s best. The actual color does work on straight hair as long as it’s done well though!

ETA: I found this picture on google, but it’s very similar to my length and color: http://pophaircuts.com/images/2014/10/Blonde-Ombre-Hair-Amazing-Ombre-Hair-Colour-Ideas-for-2015.jpg

I have it! I love it, upkeep is minimal. I had a dark brown to essentially blonde over the summer, but toned it down to a medium brown to ashy blonde now for winter. I’ll probably go brighter for summer again. I really love it. I actually have extensions with it, so it brings out the lighter colors even more (my extensions are varying shades of blonde).

It costs about $130 for a full head with my hairdresser, but she comes to my home so there’s no overhead cost.  It’s like another $20 for whatever toner she uses.

Re: maintenance – my natural color is like yours, and when I do the light light blonde at the end, like your picture, I have to have her come out and tone it periodically. It was like 2 months in and my natural hair started looking slightly warm/reddish (it was disguised by the extensions but when I lifted up my hair separate from the extensions I could see it turning a little reddish). She toned it and took the warmth out, and it looked brand new again.  It is more expensive than regular highlights but the upkeep is less, so in the end it’s probably about the same price once it’s all projected out. I say go for it 🙂

Boxerlover24:  I have balayage! I love it! I’d never colored my hair before but was bored with the color, and I also didn’t want to commit to the upkeep of highlights. It looks super natural but brightens everything up. My stylist charges me for a full foil, and I get it done once every 4 ish months.

rainandfire:  it’s not perm’ed, it’s just blown out after the balayage.
