@noodlesploosh: I use Bank of America. They are pretty much everywhere. Also, if you ever travel internationally they have free ATMs a lot of places. I can use a Barklay’s ATM in London with no fee because I’m a Bank of America customer.

My Fiance has an account at Chase, there are a lot of Chase ATMs around too.

The other option is opening a checking account with ING. They have free withdrawals from all those little ATMs you see in bodegas, outside bars, etc.

@Belle2Be: What problems have you had with B of A? I’ve had an account with them for 5 years now and have never had a problem.

Well, I am actually an expert at this.

I have had BOA for almost 10 years and I was very hesitent to change. Fiance has Chase and our joint account is Chase, so I thought, let me investigate Chase for my own checking so that it would be easier to transfer funds.

The reason that I have decided to forego my BOA account and go for Chase is becuase Chase offers you rewards on your debit card. You pay $25 for the year, and if you use your debit card for over $200 a month (which I do) then it pays for itself. You get 1% cashback or credit towards gift cards etc. The only thing is you have to use your debit card and press credit when you make purchases at the stores, which is very easy to do.

I called BOA and told them this, but they were like, sorry we don’t have anything like that.

Additionally, there are Chase ATMs in all Duane Reades, but what I usually do is get cashback at grocerystores or Pharmacies when I see I am running low.

Hope this helps!

@DashingBride: That makes sense. But the only thing I use my debit card for is to get cash out of ATMs. I use my credit card for everything else because I get airline miles.

I have almost 200,000 miles on United (and when the merger with Continental is complete those will be usable on Continental too). I travel a lot of visit family and having those miles will come in VERY handy.

I love chase. We have the rewards card (Chase Freedom) and we are constantly getting back $100 or $250 checks. It’s a nice bonus! Plus, there are chase ATMs everywhere in NYC–they’re in practically all Duane Reades  too.  That’s the main reason I didn’t want to give up my Chase account when we got married (DH has Citibank)–it’s just so convenient!

if you open a fidelity checking account they will pay the ATM fees at any ATM for you.  very helpful if you travel a lot!
