Background: I live in an apartment complex which allows dogs of all kinds. I myself am an owner and follow the rules outlined in our lease. Dogs are to be on a leash, must be picked up after…you get the jist. It’s a really nice place that is just awesome to live in if you are a dog owner!
Except if you encounter this one couple that happens to be kind of neighbors to us accross the yard. They never leash their dogs, they say its because their dog’s are puppies and that they want them to be able to run, understandable for the concept that it is, except its so dangerous for the rest of us. I was just sitting here taking a break after getting off of work and all the sudden I hear this one dog screaming and yelping and the other growling and then the dogs owners screaming at the dog to get off. Another dog attack, and it dawns on me that their dogs attack other dogs every other day, no exageration. I have a fear every time I take my dogs out that their dogs are currently out (I have to creep and see) or that when I come back from our walks they will be out and bam, their dogs are going to attack my dogs, which one of mine happens to be an ‘aggressive’ breed who is just protective but totally sweet. Usually I don’t have to worry unless a dog charges us, in which case I have to scoop up my pooch so no trouble is caused.
Oh did I mention that after this last attack she beat her dog on her porch while screaming at it “HAVE YOU LOST YOUR F*%(ING MIND?” like the dog understands…
Well here is what I did: I reported them to the complex office for never keeping their dogs on leashes. OH and their dogs don’t stay where they are, they take off. If I hear or see her hit her dog like that again I feel like I should report her someplace else….
I’m not like actively upset or angry, I know those dogs arn’t bad but their owners are not training them for anything in their life. I guess I just want to vent/get opinions. Should I have done nothing and left it alone, because I always feel like what we see in life isn’t the full story? I just can’t take/jusitfy watching someone hit their dog like that and scream at it like it understands. I guess i’m hoping the leash complaint will stop these dog attacks and make our neighborhood safer… was I in the wrong? I just wan’t safety for all involved :/ but still not be a bad neighbor.

Sorry, the second I would have seen her beating her dog, I would have called the local animal authorities and possibly the police. Mostly to keep me from teaching her a lesson.
Your dogs are in danger, other peoples dogs are in danger, clearly her dog is in danger. Fuck this woman, seriously. I have no sympathy for her at all.

@TexasPeach: woah…it would be one thing if they were sweet little puppies. Totally unacceptable

@HappySky7: Yeah I have never seen her do that before, but after thinking about it she was probably really upset that her dog did that. It’s not ok. if her dog was on a leash it would cure about 100% of the problems. If her dog isn’t running around and attacking dogs therefore she won’t hit it? This whole situation just makes me want to resuce all the dogs in the world and hug them :/
@Ninteenthchance: Yeah they are both larger dogs, nothing against larger dogs- I have large dogs myself.

EDIT::: I should rephrase my word choice of ‘beat’ I guess in my super southern ness its kind of like ‘getting a beating’. But beat could be procieved as kicking and punching and really harsh stuff. But I still do not defend her. It was a hit that was loud enough for me to hear in my apartment across the yard and draw serious concern. It wasn’t a butt pat thats for sure. regardless it was unfair to the dog that doesn’t know better. I can not think of a single reason to hit a animal or person that way….
sorry for any misconception about beat, perhaps strike is a better word.

@TexasPeach: Yeah no, unless you put the leash on that woman it’s not going to fix that dogs problems.

@TexasPeach: I have to agree with Yuno, but especially if they’re larger dogs… They really need to be (properly) controlled and you SHOULD compain when you have a legit issue like this.
Large dogs have different rules than small ones. They have to have better manners and they need owners to take responsibility for teaching them these things. A 6lb chihuahua can jump up on a person without scaring them, but if an 80lb lab does it they can’t help but look threatening. Sorry. That turned into a semi unrelated rant. I hate it when people just let their dogs run wild!
Anyhow, you would probably be well within your rights to complain directly to the owner as well. I don’t know how much good it would do, but maybe it will guilt them into keeping the leash on when they see YOU at least.
