Personally I would give the child a birthday present either at the party or at another time.  I myself would never show up for a childs birthday party without a gift for them even if the invitation said no gifts.

This is why it is rude to ask for no gifts.

Some peole will follow the hosts wishes and not give gifts, and others will give a gift in spite of the hosts requests, which will leave the non-gifters feeling awkward at the party.

I would follow her wishes, even if I do not agree with them.  Being polite means accepting all gifts will grace, and then re-gifting or donating those you don’t want/need.
