What a week. Last Friday we viewed what I would consider to be my dream property. Period farmhouse, newly renovated, planning permission for a huge extension, but the icing on the cake-1.75 acres of garden with access to a private woodland. Within our budget! Even Fiance who is normally pretty blasé about house hunting was saying he could see us living there. Small problem:our place isn’t on the market. Cue a frantic weekend of finishing off all DIY, shifting the majority of our belongings into the loft and general decluttering and cleaning, called estate agent first thing Monday, booked them in for photos and measurements Wednesday, called the bank about finance, all good there. But then… this morning-a closing date has been set on the property, for next Wednesday 🙁 (what that means is all interested parties who want to make an offer have to submit their very best offer by the closing date and the seller then checks them to see which one they prefer. Also known as sealed bids). We were in this position with our current place but back then we were first time buyers, finance secured and beat the other offer by less than a grand.
This time however we are the most undesirable buyer-a buyer who hasn’t sold. Our property will probably be on the market Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. It will hopefully sell quickly, but it won’t be quick enough. We can still of course make an offer on the dream house but it would have to be EXTREMELY interesting for them to overlook the fact we haven’t sold our place. The problem with this process is that there is very little room for negotiation-you submit your money, and when you want to complete by and that’s basically it unless the seller comes back to you.
I feel like we’ve lost the house, even though we never had it in the first place. People are telling me ‘there’ll be a better one around the corner’ and ‘if its meant to be then it will be’ but none of this is helping. We worked SO HARD this weekend on the house, I’d already mentally moved in to the dream house. I am deflated. If only this place had come on the market a couple of weeks later. What it has done though is get us to get the house ready and on the market. I just hope it isn’t all for nothing and we end up with a dud house.
Please share with me your house buying success stories to cheer me up!!
