I don’t buy milk often, but when I do, I buy unhomogenized, low temperature pasteurized, so I do both shake & smell.

The milk at home never lasts long enough to go bad so i never really bother smelling it. I do shake it though, i have to, its a psychological thing I’m sure.

I smell, not shake. I don’t smell maybe the first few times I use it but after that I definitely always smell it because I’m paranoid about sour milk. But I also don’t drink milk all that often and only eat it with cereal so I’m not exactly a milk lover.

I shake it and smell it. When I was living by myself for the first time ever, I bought a gallon of milk and used it over a week. I had a while to go before the expiration date so I figured it would be fine. I attmept to make myself a bowl of cereal and discover that the milk is not fine. There I was with no money, my last bowl of cereal ruined with curdled milk.I vaguely remember calling my mom crying begging her to put some grocery money in my checking account since my student loan had not come through :/ It had already been a bad week…

After that experience I always smell it and shake it just to make sure. Haha.

I shake EVERYTHING unless it’s carbonated. Fiance thinks it’s weird, but I always shake whatever I drink, justa habit. I skeeve milk and have a super sensitive nose, so I always smell and shake…I only use it if I am having a couple cookies or cereal, and can’t have it unless it’s super fresh (my family tends to think if the date says it’s fine, it must be fine…I go by smell-if it’s before the date and smells fine, okay..if it’s close to the date, regardless of smell or anything, I dump it.)

I go by the expiration date, unless someone nearby is willing to sniff it for me. I am pretty grossed out by milk anyway, and hate having spoiled milk in the fridge, so I would rather lose money than accidentally taste/smell bad milk. I’ve never shaken it before – probably because I normally throw it out the day it expires.

Neither.  It doesn’t last long around here, so it’s never close to an expiration date.

I think it’s just out of habit but I smell it! Well, then again I smell everything! Lol! I also shake it when it gets low, but that’s about it!

@ashe89:  Oh, duh, that makes sense. Now I have to see if FI’s mom does this, since she was raised on a farm and used to milk cows/drink milk straight from the cow!

@linz09:  Glad I’m not the only one who shakes chocolate milk lolololol.

Come to think of it, I shake a lot of stuff–juices, coffee creamer, that ready to drink iced coffee.

I shake it and check the expiration date. I don’t know why I shake it. I know it doesn’t separate, but I do it every time anyway. If it’s nearing the expiration date, I’ll smell it. I won’t use it if it’s passed the expiration date.

I am a weirdo when it comes to milk. If it has been open for more than2-3 days I will not drink it. And even then I still smell it.
