I think of my water filter.

Bridget, with the nickname Britta, maybe?

As you said. I am from Northern Europe and the name isn’t uncommon. I think it was popular around the 80s. I have a bunch of friends namend Britta. We also have the water filters and nobody mixes that up or makes fun of it.

But having an uncommon US name myself (in Europe it’s a common name along the lines of Kathryn or Alexandra) but here it converts to a kinda weird ethinic name. People are often confused when I show up as they expected someone else or misspell it completely. I hate it so much that I am thinking to change my name completely to my nickname (which is still uncommon (been among the tree most popular girls names in Northern Europe for the past 5 years btw) with the Natualization process.

I say don’t do that to your child. Don’t make her spell her name all her life.

I know a few Brittas here in the States and no one has ever brought up water filters. I like the name!

Will she get teased about water filters?  Probably not.  Kids are far more immediate in what they tease about and there’s not a lot of comedy in water filters.  They’ll probably tease her about dozens of things directly related to her (glasses, hair, etc.) instead.

That said, I also just don’t like the name.  I know there was a character on Community with the name.  Meh.  It just sounds harsh and incomplete somehow.  But not my kid, so have at it.

Britta sounds like a skeletally thin, chain smoking, neurotic person who asks for the manager all the time.

I’m ambivalent. I don’t love or hate it. I think of the character from Community before I think of the water filter.
