Ok sorry this is all too tech-y for me to understand.
Darling Husband got an EXD (external hard drive) for his PC computer (Vista). It will always be hooked up to his computer, however, there will be times when he needs to transfer stuff from PC to Mac. Its a “WD: Elemends” 2 TB EXD but it won’t work for my Mac without reformatting.
I hooked the EXD to my PC & it worked, I went to re-format it, but it only gives the options NTFS & exFAT. I was told to use FAT32, but apparently, the EXD is too big at 2TB? I started formatting the EXD last night at 11pm into the exFAT, at noon today its 50% done. Its taking forever & I just read that it won’t even work with my Mac.
What format do I need the 2TB EXT drive to work with both my Mac & PC? The computer guy at the store said I needed a 3rd party thing & it should be free online. Where do I get this? He didn’t say the type of format I needed it to be thou. I’m very confused in this & hoping someone knows about this.
I feel a little wierd posting this in WB, but I don’t really know where else to go… thanks!

That’s pretty tricky, as I’ve seen Western Digital external hard drives lose everything on them when plugged into a Mac, especially if Time Machine is activated. A lot of manufacturers are trying to copy-protect data, and like the iPhone or iPod, don’t want you to be able to shuffle items back and forth easily. I just bought a Western Digital 1TB drive, and have given up hope to be able to transfer files between my PC and work Mac.
maybe this will help?

I use a WD and was able to hook up to both a PC and Mac but I am now having trouble with it. Not sure what the problem is yet or if it stemmed from this but we’ll see.

Thanks Isilme, the FAT32 format won’t work… thanks thou!
The computer shop guy said I could do something like split formating where 1/2 the EXD is for Mac & 1/2 is for PC. Not sure if that would work or how to do that. Or if that would cause issues later?
@caszos – I have a WD one that works with my Mac & my PC. Mostly its photos that I’m transfering around. I haven’t had any issues with it so far. Hopefully yours is ok!

Did you ever figure this out ? It sounds like he was recommending you partition the drive, which is what I was going to recommend too. 🙂
Do you need to be able to transfer things from the PC to the Mac and back using this HD, or just for backs up on both? Partitioning would work for the latter, but not the former. (Unless you set up on partitioned part to be used by both.)
