MrsYellowDaffodil:  Hello!  I don’t know a ton about San Jose – but am also in the Bay Area rental market.  I definitely feel you, girl!!  We are moving out of living with roommates for the same reason (too old for that shit, lol) – and really only got an affordable place by word of mouth from a friend. <br /> In general, I would avoid East San Jose – I think it tends to be the sketchiest part.  Parts of downtown are great, but it can be pricey.  Maybe try the Willow Glen area?  Very cute!  But also might be pricey :-/  I used to work around the south san jose area (almaden etc), and those seemed to be nice and safe!  A little more suburban/residential, but nice!  Have you checked out surrounding cities (sunnyvale, campbell).  I think Santa Clara is just as expensive, bc of the university.  Honestly, when I’ve been apartment hunting I just seriously hound Craigslist and make myself available at any time to go see a good place!  You’d be surprised how insanely competetive the market is.  Just keep your eye out, you will find something good!  It just takes time.  Keep your head up!!!
