It was beautiful out today around here, so I took out the giant industrial size sack-o-summer clothes from under our bed and dumped it out to find something to wear.
Fiance came in and said
“um… you might be a hoarder, only the kind who folds stuff…and does laundry, and without the rats…and dirt, okay so you’re not a hoarder, but holy shit…clothes….”
So I’ve spent the evening sorting through ALL of the clothes I own – and realized I had two skirts and a sweater I’ve had since high school (10 years ago), a hoodie I’ve had since freshman year of college (9 years ago), a pair of jeans I’ve had for at least 8 years, and like 6 white wifebeaters from Old Navy that get deodorant stains on them, but I keep them around for workout clothes (why oh why God, can we not figure out a way to wear white clothes and deodorant?)
I do feel like I’m hesitant to get rid of stuff if its still wearable, because I don’t want to be wasteful. Shit. Now I DO sound like a hoarder. Hahaha.
How often do you go through your clothes and purge?

i still have maternity clothes i wear…. my oldest is 7 and y youngest is 3… i have a problem. lol. normally if its one size up or down my current size ill keep it unless it has holes and stains. if its more then that size difference its GONE.

I go through my closet about 4-5 months during the year. I have a lot of clothes. I have been with my Fiance for almost 3 years and he has yet to see me wear half of my entire closet. When I pull out the clothes I won’t wear anymore I usually pass it on to friends and family who could use them. My clothes stay in very good condition so I know someone would be interested.

@asianyoushi: thats a good system, but part of my problem is that I’m the exact same size I was when I was 17 – I have a feeling after I have a baby, a LOT of this stuff will be gonzo 😛
@msfuturea: I bring stuff to the consignment shop downtown, but since she only takes stuff on season, I end up keeping it in my closet to bring to her when the season is right, and then totally forgetting about it. Or I’m like “Oh I forgot about this! I’ll definitely wear it this summer!!” (nope!)

@mandypop: As of late, I have been giving them away to my best friend who has lost over 100lbs and counting. She is going to love getting more stuff when I move in my FH at then of this year…I def have to reduce my closet….it’s just too much.

Well I lost a significant amount of weight (130 pounds) in the past three+ years so sadly I have had to purge my closest of a great deal of my clothes.
I typically buy higher end items as staples and mix in lower priced items as well. The higher end items (like a Dior velvet Jacket found at a vintage store five years ago…love!) I had altered to fit the new me and will never get rid of. The lesser priced items I typically get rid of every five years or so and replace. Vintage thrift stores around here are great for selling and replacing.
Shoes, purses, accessories those NEVER get tossed out for expense reasons (again I consider them a personal investment) plus the moment you get rid of a pair of earrings you end up buying an outfit they would be perfect with.

Well, I still fit into my high school stuff since its only been 4 years… I still have some jeans, sweaters, favorite Tee’s, etc., from high school lol.

Yeah, I still wear stuff from high school, haha. (I’m 27). I have a very good reason though! At any given time, I only fit into about 1/3 of my clothes cause my weight fluctuates too much and I have clothes in pretty each stage of weight gain or loss I go through. If I throw anything out, I may not have anything to wear when I lose/gain weight! Luckily for me, none of the stuff I buy are to trendy.

I just realized today that the belt I was wearing was given to me (second hand) in 8th grade- roughly 14 years ago D: It’s a great belt though, I’ll use it until it falls apart!

I desperately need to purge about half my clothes. Some of the ones I have to get rid of are relatively new (and cheap) impulse purchases. Most of the stuff I’ve had around for a long time I kept for a reason… like a dress I bought when I was 13 in a sale. Back then it was knee length and loose. Now it’s about 2 inches above the knee and tight, but the cut still suits me, so I still wear it 15 years later. Why not, eh? I stopped growing at 14, so I’m roughly the same height I was then.

Clothes only get thrown out if they aren’t wearable. Excessively holey, too small/big, stained beyond any repair, etc. Other than that I keep old clothes because they ALWAYS have a use. Workout clothes, garden clothes, extra clothes for family and friends, underlayers for the winter, lounge clothes, fat day clothes, you name it and I have an item of clothing for it. I prepared the term “decidedly prepared for every scenario” over hoarder or pack rat. 😀

if I still wear it, I keep it. Some of my jeans are 6+ years old, and a few tops are over 8 years. I decided though if I haven’t worn it in 2 or more years and probably won’t again, then out it goes. First to family, some of my little cousins love my hand me downs cause they are still nice and usually designer.. But if they don’t like it either, it gets donated.

I moved in with Darling Husband (then FI) almost 5 years ago and had a very small wardrobe due to the long distance move, I left a bunch of clothes at my paretns’ house. Over the years, I brought more of my stuff from my parents’ and bought new clothes but I still had the mentality that my wardrobe was limited and didn’t really purge. Darling Husband would suggest I purge some clothes when I bought new ones and I have donated a bag or so 3-4 times (in 4 years). So, I still have a lot of clothes. I am preparing for another upcoming move and won’t have as much storage space in the new apartment for clothes or shoes. I am already dreading the purge and have started slowly. I decided to use years this time as a factor. If I bought it more than 5 years ago and have not worn it in the past 6ish months without good reason it was kicked out. I happened to be doing so when a freind was over who is the same size and she was excited to take most of my cast aways as she tends to shop for her children and not herself these days so it was perfect. It is always hard to get rid of clothes/shoes because I always feel like I will need something after it is gone.

I usually go through all my clothes twice a year – when I change them over for going into summer and going into winter. I do have the odd piece of clothing I have had for years but I try to get rid of anything I haven’t even looked at yet alone worn in 2 years or so.
I take the clothes down to the local salvation army or pass them onto my younger cousins.
I have kept a few clothes such as an old shirt of DH’s and some of my old jeans to paint in, or if I need clothes that I don’t mind getting wrecked.
