So I just thought I would post a small tutorial on how to make a cute little belly cake for a baby shower. I love making these and I just finished making one for my BM’s cousin who is expecting a girl and the shower is tomorrow.
So this is actually a pretty easy cake to make. We first use a 13×9 rectangle, we used the half soccer pan from Michaels (but you can use a mixing bowl that can go in the oven) and two smaller domes to make the boobs (we have the mini dolls mold also from Michaels).
So using the rectangle as a base, place the belly and the boobs on top according to how you would like it to be. Using a good carving knife, cut around to give it the shape you want. I usually just cut around the boobs and belly. Once that’s cut, keep all those scraps cuz you’ll be eating them while you’re making the cake or Fiance will just come in and eat them hehehe
Then I make my filling, for this one I made cookies and cream filling as per the request. So I sliced the bottom part of the cake in two, removed the top part and spread out a generous amount of filling.
Then I put the top part on and put some more filling under the belly and under the boobs and place those on top where they are suppose to go.
Once all that was done, time to cover it with some buttercream so it can crust a bit before covering it with fondant. I added a little ball of fondant to make the belly button stick out when I do cover it.
So while that sets a bit, you can make the little shoes. I have this great template that I found on cake central.com – great site for cakes. I can def email it to you if you would like to try them. It does tell you exactly how to do the shoes, step by step.
For the shoes, I usually mix half fondant and half gum paste to help it dry faster.
I cut out all the pieces required, and started assembling. I’ll let the pictures that for themselves in this part.
Now that the shoes are done, we can move on to the cake while those rest and harden. So for the cake, I rolled out fondant big enough to cover the cake.
Then covered the cake and using my little pizza wheel cut out the excess fondant that I won’t need.
Now it’s time to decorate! I made a little belt using my cutter
I use just water to glue fondant to fondant, it’s perfect, I know some other people use other stuff but for me it works perfectly.
Then I made flowers with the remaining purple and white fondant from the shoes and excess. Again gluing them with water to the cake.
My Bridesmaid or Best Man came over and did her little peanut – she calls the baby her little peanut and so it’s a little thing between her and her cousing, she wanted to add that touch on the cake. So she did a peanut using fondant, made the face using fondant/cookie markers, and used carving tools that I have to make the details on the peanut.
I added the letters for the Welcome Baby Emma using my letter cutters.
And now it’s time to assemble everything, shoes and peanut.
And there you go, your own belly baby shower cake! Hopefully this will inspire you ladies to try it. Thanks for reading.
