I’m asking for donations towards a Sony NEX 5N for Christmas. I’ve found it for about $650 here, and it seems to me to be a really great camera, without getting up to the huge size and price of regular DSLRs. I like that it is small, but still has the capability for interchangeable lenses for when I learn more about photography.

Have you thought about Craigslist? Both my Darling Husband and Father-In-Law have had great success in purchasing high quality cameras for more affordable price off of Craigslist. That’s how I got my awesome DSLR for my bday–DH bought last year’s model for a really good deal from a guy who wanted to sell it and upgrade.

Darling Husband got me a Canon digital Rebel for a really great price and it’s fantastic.

@HappilyEverAfter54: I’ve always had Nikon for my point and shoot cameras, but I really, really love the Rebel.

I usually check slickdeals.net before buying anything like that.  There’s no really good sales right now, but just to give you an idea of a good price point, the best I’ve seen is Canon T3 Kit with 18-55mm lens for $425, or Canon T3i w/ EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS + EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS + EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III + PIXMA Pro 9000 Mark II Photo Printer $863 after $400 rebate.  I think the T2i runs a little less with the same lenses and printer.  Amazon runs this promo every now and then.  But definitely keep an eye out on slickdeals or fatwallet

We just bought a Nikon D3100 from Best Buy for $550. They were running pretty decent deals recently on their cameras. I love our new camera.

I’d stay with canon if you’re already used to canon :). My friend has a DSLR nikon & I have a hard time figuring things out on it (I use canon as well)!

Try searching http://www.bhphotovideo.com/

This one is $500 (you get a rebate) & you get a kit lens (which are NOT very good quality but should get you by):

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Canon+-+EOS+Digital+Rebel+T3+12.2-Megapixel+Digital+SLR+Camera+Kit/1987075.p?id=1218304513854&skuId=1987075

EDIT: If you can find a good camera body without a lens, I’d do that & then purchase a higher quality lens instead of getting the kit ones. Yea, they do okay but the quality of the lens will make the picture quality less. If canon, you want a gold ring or red ring (its at the end of the lenses).

If you just need the camera for one event, I would rent one and save your money for a better camera. If you did a 3 day rental, for example, it would give you a couple days to fiddle around and get to know the camera before you shoot the event. A point and shoot or lower level DSLR does not have the low light capabilities that you will need to shoot a nighttime event. I’d rent at least a Caonon EOS60D with a lens that can open up to at least f2.8 (lower than that is even better!!) and a good flash.

I bought my digital camera on this website refurbdepot.com , it has refurbished electronics at cheaper prices.  I have had this camera for maybe 4 years now and have NEVER had a problem with it!  I would definitely buy from them again.
