Soooo. Does anyone have any good ideas of how we can get ten laptops for our classroom? We have desktop computers, which are bulky, slow, and have problems…like the mice and keyboards often lose their connection to the CPU. There is no more money in the budget to buy more laptops.
I am going to look into grant opportunities, but I thought I would see if anyone had a creative idea of how to get some.
I work in an urban charter school as a reading coach. School started Tuesday, it’s assessment time, and then I will no longer be on the Bee all the time booooo. Except lunch, which is now. Yes, at 10:30. I share a small space with the math coach; together we work with about ten kids at a time. If we had laptops, we could work with MORE kids!!!!

Have you heard of Donors Choose? Every teacher should know about this! It’s this really awesome website where you can set up a page for what you need for your classroom and why, people can donate to your project, and your kids write a thank-you letter to the donors and you can post pictures of your students using the items.
One of my friends (also a reading coach) uses the site all the time, and she’s gotten iPads, MP3 players for audiobooks, and a bunch of other stuff for her classroom that way. I definitely plan on using it once I have my own classroom!

I work on the policy side of education and would recommend applying for a grant. There tend to be tons available, especially for technology, with it being a priority of the Obama Administration.
Also, a lot of larger corporations have an office that you could contact and ask if they would consider making a donation. Philanthropy is catching, these days.

@Regina Phalange: I’ve gotten smaller things through donorschoose. I will set it up for laptops, but I am pretty sure I need a larger bit of funding than my friends for this one!
Thanks for reminding me, though. =)
ETA: I just logged into my account and remembered the problem: you have to have enough points through previous projects to be able to “shop” outside their chosen suppliers. I have 5 points; I need 6 to get laptops, I THINK. Looking at it…=)
