Hubs and I will be in Austin for an extended weekend in November…he is a UT grad but it’s only my 2nd trip there. Last time everything was rushed, but we’ll have a couple of days to spend and are staying in the 6th Street area…so my question is given my love of unique & especially handmade things and clothing…which shops should I make a point to check out?

Definitely go check out the drag (Guadalupe St.) – there are tons of great shops there…Fiance & I love Toy Joy – it’s a really unique toy shop that has TONS of crazy and different toys…it’s a blast!

head down to South Congress and check out the stores there. I used to love the drag area store when I was in undergrad & would drive 30 miles to check them out. I went to UT for grad school & the drag didn’t have the same appeal. It seems like a lot of the really neat unique stores closed down. I do agree that Toy Joy is amazing. It brings out the inner kid.

thanks…that is the problem we were having. The places he & his friends remember loving just aren’t there anymore, which is really sad!

Hmmmm. There is a great place called Wildflower on Lamar (with at like 10th and Lamar I think) that is awesome home stuff.
Check out Blue Elephant in the 38th street shopping center (the one with Central Market). It is at 38th & Lamar.
If you want to feel like you’ve died and gone to fashion heaven, go to Luxe Apothetique in the Arboreteum. Take Mopac to 183, exit Great Hills Trail, go through about 2 lights, and you’ll see it in between Saks & Sephora. Everytime I go in there I want to cry a little though, so expensive and every single thing is amazing.
Of course there is always my ultimate favorite shop– Uncommon Objects on South Congress. Half the antiques in my house are from there.
