I saw a promo on it but didn’t see it. Are they polygamists? My first thought was, how can you agree to filming? Isn’t it illegal?

I was in awe also. Fiance and I watched an episode..

@JennyW1: Yes it is a show about polygamists. I also thought this was illegal in the US?

JennyW, I think they aren’t technically legally married. They just live as if they were and have the ceremony, but they don’t have the legal documents. But yes, even that is apparently still illegal in their state and they’re being investigated. I saw a news clip about it and they said that even though it is illegal to live under the pretense of being married to multiple people, they generally only prosecute if there are underage girls, abuse, or woman being forced to do it against their will.

While the thought of loving a man who has more than one wife is just so absolutely forgeign to me (nor would I want more than one husband), I try not to pass judgement as long as everyone is in agreement and is happy. It’s not the “norm” here, but that doesn’t mean our way is the only way.

I haven’t watched the show, but read an article about it. Basically only one of the women is legally his wife, but the three others live as his wives as well (they’re just not legally married), so I don’t think it’s illegal.

Edited to add:

@JoesWifey: Interesting– I didn’t know it was illegal “to live under the pretense of being married to multiple people.” I guess it makes sense though. I wonder why they would choose to do filming then, knowing that.

I guess it’s fine if they’re all happy and it works for them. If I were one of those women’s mothers, though, I’d be extremely concerned about her financial/legal security. If you’re someone’s spouse, then you have legal rights if they get sick, die, divorce you etc. You don’t have those rights if you’re not married; certainly not if they’re officially married to someone else.

As a feminist, though, I have to admit I’m kind of glad that the laws banning it exist.

Jenni- I don’t think it’s illegal in all states (but maybe). They’re in Utah, if I recall correctly?

I was totally fascinated! I watched the whole thing. He is only legally married to his first wife, Meri. The others are his wife in terms of a mutual commitment, but not legally.

They all grew up in that environment – it makes me think that if you did not know any differently, how would you realize that you don’t have to be the same way? He does seem to care about them all and provides for them. I can not judge what other people choose to live their life, but just use that to understand what I have chosen for myself.

@totheislnds: I totally agree!!! There is SO MUCH bitterness in these woman! (Not that I wouldn’t be a little bitter too if my husband had 3 other wives!) They all seem to really be uncomfortable with this new wife (who I think seems like a air head anyway).

This show is my addiction too. Even though I seem to like this family as individual people, their way of life just saddens me to no end. =(

@July: I don’t think you sounded judgmental at all!  Just curious!

I have watched the show and agree with most PP that it is fascinating.  At the same time though I think there is a lot of animosity and hurt feelings amongst some of them.  Bringing the new wife into the mix seemed to have caused some turmoil amongst them and he didn’t really seem to care.  I am interested to see where the show goes from here now that they are all married.

@July: I dont think you sounded judgmental. Yes, it is real and this is actually how they live their lifestyle. Polygamy has been around for ages but I guess never publicized so much!
