last night, Congress was not able to agree on a resolution to define government spending, and since the existing CR (“continuing resolution”) expired at midnight, all “non essential” government activities shut down.
essential stuff— everything from air traffic controllers to deployed service members — will continue to operate as normal. Parks and museums are shut down. If they can’t get a spending plan together by Monday, things like research labs and public works projects will not start back to work. Most government office workers are getting a mini vacation, and whether or not they get paid is still unknown but the thousands of contractors won’t. And all the small businesses nationwide that support the government (like restaurants near government office buildings) will lose money.
Today is the one year anniversary of Trump’s inauguration and while there are several marches planned in DC and nationwide, the president himself may be headed to Mar- a-Lago where there is a “Trump campaign” fundraiser for rich GOP donors (tickets cost up to $150k/couple).

Horseradish : what an anniversary present. Shut down for you! Shut down for you! We all get a shut down!

It increasingly feels like our govt is run by schoolchildren on the playground.

Horseradish : Anyone else think the shutdown was a troll move to screw with Trumps big party plans? Hehehehehe!

It’s ridiculous. There was *maybe* hope for a bipartisan deal, and Congress took it to Trump and he completely torpedoed it without offering any kind of alternative.
This is what happens when you have the executive branch and both houses of Congress controlled by a party who hates the federal government and says it’s inept. They can’t let it, you know, actually function and help people, and still maintain their argument.

So while the government is shut down and people are worried about possibly not getting a paycheck…
The angry Cheeto is spending HOW much to go to his winter White House?

Pretty sad to have the government shutdown on your watch when your party controls all three houses. That’s some “art of the deal”, must be some kind of ironic modern art that goes over my head.
Happy anniversary Do Nothin’ Don!

“In 1975, the Australian government shut down because the legislature had failed to fund it, deadlocked by a budgetary squabble….Queen Elizabeth II’s official representative in Australia, Governor General Sir John Kerr, simply dismissed the prime minister. He appointed a replacement, who immediately passed the spending bill to fund the government. Three hours later, Kerr dismissed the rest of Parliament. Then Australia held elections to restart from scratch. And they haven’t had another shutdown since.”

If you didn’t care when the government got shut down during Obama’s time in office, why would you care about it now? It sucked both times and all politicians need to stop acting like big babies and work together. The extreme bipartisanship in this country is becoming utterly ridiculous and doing no one any good. I’m fed up with all conservatives being painted as racist assholes as much as I am with liberals being painted as money-stealing babies or whatever the hell it is. Neither is true. It’s a load of hypocrisy from all sides (and no, I am not coming back to this thread… I’m just venting and running)

I wish we could shut down the White House and exterminate it for vermin.

I did care the first time, I knew a few people affected by it.

It’s the first ever government shutdown where the president’s party is in control of the House, Senate and Executive branch.
Can’t say I’m surprised. Nothing surprises me anymore these days :/

skunktastic : Not arguing with there being a problem with partisanship but I think comparing the last shut down to this shutdown is a bit apples and oranges. This has never happened before when one party controlled both houses and the executive branch that I know of.
Sorry to tag you and bring you back to this thread!

skunktastic : As PPs said, this is different because one party has a majority in all branches of government and they can’t function enough to keep the government going! That’s a big fucking deal.
Also, frankly this shows that conservatives in Congress / White House ARE racist assholes. The only reason this happened is because they refused to address DACA. Something like 85% of the country wants these kids who were brought here as babies and this is their only home, to be able to work and pay taxes and go to college and help – dare I say it – make America great again. But no, they should live like fugitives and get deported to somewhere they can’t even remember and where they have no family. Yeah that’s some racist bullshit right there.
