Tisa85 :  Is it dead? It looks to me like a spider that got smooshed into a weird position and then dried out that way.

It looks like a spider that died in the process of molting. Here, I found a time lapse picture of the process.

lurkingvee :  no ma’am. ancient astronaut theorists suggest that that is indeed an alien.

A molting spider was my first thought too… actually second thought. My first thought was “is it dead?!?!”.  That’s a freaky looking spider even without the molting exoskeleton! What part of the globe to you live on???

It looks like it has 8 legs. So my logical side says gigantic spider. But I’m leaning more towards alien octopus. ๐Ÿ™ƒ

slomotion :  hahahahahah so my first thought too.

As the resident biology teacher on the bee, I can confirm it is a molting arachnid. There are over 650 species of spiders in Britain and without a size reference I can’t give an exact species name.

Tisa85 :  can you be brave and measure it? I have an idea if it is ginormous. It may be the Cardinal spider which grows up to 14 cm.
