You might want to start with just an email telling them that you heard about the rumors they are spreading and you would like them to stop since it could be considered libel.

@MrsSaltWaterTaffy: She was right when she said slander.  Slander =spoken, libel = written (or spoken if it’s media like radio/television) defamation of character.

But, I’d still just shoot them a quick email saying you’ve heard what they’re telling people and that it’s slander, so you’d appreciate that they stop immediately.

send an email. it might be helpful to call an employment lawyer to figure out how to word the email…many will give a free consultation.

I agree with the PP’s but I would also ask for them to write you a letter of recommendation. The damage is already done for those they have already spewed this crap too but having the letter would prove that you were a good employee.
