Blood and swelling is a sign of injury and so you definitely did something but you don’t know you did anything so I wouldn’t worry about it too much. Even if you go to the doctor they won’t do anything for you but tell you to go home and ice it – so I suggest that you ice it to make the swelling go down! You might want to keep the activity levels down until the swelling is gone because it will be more susceptible to injury!

I am sure it will go away soon!

I have some scar tissue in my ankle that occasionally swells up and turns blue from an injury several years ago. The slightest little turn (even if I don’t notice it) will make it swell up like a sprain but usually goes away within a day or two. That’s the only thing I can think of that would make it do that?!

Did you bang it in the middle of the night while getting up to pee? I do that all the time, and don’t remember.

As a Physical Therapist, I would also say R.I.C.E.  Rest it, Ice it (compression unless you are going to wrap it in an ace bandage you can forgo this one) and keep it elevated above your heart level.  Do this for a few days and see if it goes away.  If it isn’t painful that’s probably a pretty good sign it should go away pretty easily but if it is persistent I would recommend going to see a doctor just to make sure:)  Hope this is sort of helpful!
