Yikes, this is a tough situation for your Fiance to be in, but he absolutely did the right thing in paying for it. I personally would have told him not to worry about it, but I’ve also known some people on the other side of the equation.

My little bro has a roommate in his condo, and one morning, his roommate just woke up and “magically” the window pane was broken. Not in a way where someone was trying to break in, but it was clearly slammed too hard which made the pane shift. His roommate didn’t offer to pay for the window to be replaced or even offer a little help towards it, just told my little bro about it and left him to deal with it. Of course, my little bro didn’t ask him for the money, but still an unfortunate situation where his roommate accidentally broke it, but won’t help to pay for it. And windows aren’t cheap!

I do see where you’re coming from though with the car. If it’s a pretty beat up car and it’s not even worth the money it cost to fix it, I probably would have let it go. Especially b/c he was there and saw what happened.

Some people are just cheap.  I have spent years getting milked by cheap friends and friends-of-friends.  Eventually I just gave up and let them find someone else to milk…

Eeek, it sounds like the handle was just falling off… they’re not exactly easy to break off! Seems that the friend was a little embarasses and probably over reacted, but if your Fiance said he’d fix it, or pay to fix it, then he should. Then maybe he should offer to drive from now on. :/
