im going to be visiting the US for work but we are hitting NY for 5 days for some R&R and having never been there before im hoping you can suggest a nice hotel
im thinking $250-$300 per night and was looking at the hotel chandler as its a few blocks from empire state building/central park and seems like a reasonably safe area
can anyone make a suggestion for me and many thanks!

I can’t make any specific suggestions really, because my parents always stay in my neighborhood (Upper East Side) which is not exactly the center of it all.
It sort of depends what you want to be near. In my opinion, being near Herald Square/Times Square would be TORTURE. Just full of crowds and nonsense. I will say that the hotel you are talking about is not really near Central Park. It’s around 30 blocks away, which is a long walk. IMO, there’s no benefit to staying near the Empire State Building/Herald Square, because it’s really like a big mall.
Really, for tourists, any area in Manhattan below 96th street is safe. It just all depends what type of neighborhood you’d like to stay in. I would personally want to stay downtown (East Village, Lower East Side, West Village) because it’s more fun in terms of restaurants, bars, and shops. But that might not be the most fun place for someone looking to be in a Times Square type neighborhood.

Please just don’t stay in Times Square!!
I don’t know the specific hotel you mentioned, but it is centrally located, near good subways, but not in a particularly exciting neighborhood. Its also about 30 blocks (1.5 miles) from central park.
what dates are you looking at coming? hotel rates in the city have such a range depending on time of year…
also do you like trendy? just need something clean and comfortable and nice enough? do you want to be in a great neighborhood where you can really experience NYC??

thanks so far – good to read/know!
we will be there first week of May. lots of walking doesnt bother us (my record is 10hrs walking non stop in paris) and we dont like loud and too trendy. Comfortable and easy access to getting around (my coworker suggested new jersey-no thanks) and where we can enjoy/see NY is what interests us.
our plans are to do a few photography walking tours and get out and see NY and that includes the brownstones/streets, parks, buildings etc

I would suggest my neighborhood (Upper West Side). There are several train lines that will get you anywhere you want to go and we’re right by Central Park. Lots of restaurants and shopping. Further downtown is TriBeCa & Battery City. These are also quiet places but have tons of train lines to take you anywhere you want to go.

We stayed in SoHo at the Trump hotel. My bf got a pretty good deal I believe and it was convenient to everything with a subway stop right out the door. Plus there are amazing little shops (both small stores and regular name brand one) right around the corner!

when my parents come visit dh and i, they usually stay at this hotel: http://www.ontheave-nyc.com it’s comfortable and also in a really convenient location, 2 short blocks from the subway as well as walking distance to central park, riverside park, the natural history museum, and tons of great restaurants

I have had friends stay at Jolly Rogers-near the Empire State at 38th and Madison and say good things.
Also, the Washington Square Hotel near Washington Sq Park is cozy and has a great restaurant attached to it.
