This is for NY brides. I ordered 8 personalized bathrobes for my bridesmaids and I. They were on sale for $19.96 so I was really excited. When I go to checkout, I see that they are charging me $14.89 in tax and $15.47 in shipping even though I am shipping to NYC.
There are two issues with the above that I bet every shopaholic NY and NYC bride will be able to quickly notice:
1. They are charging tax on shipping, you never ever see that, tax should only be charged on the merchandise
2. Clothing under $110 in value (for each individual item) is EXEMPT from NY City and State tax (tax should be 0%, nada!)
I called americanbridal and they were less than helpful. They explained that they have a fulfillment center in NY which triggers the tax. I proceeded to explain the exemption on clothing to no avail as they kept saying that my oder was over $110 and again I explained that the limit is for each item but nothing. The customer service rep helping me spoke to her supervisor who said that they had never ever heard of this and that they needed to retain the tax. Not surprisingly, the supervisor was unavailable when I asked to speak to her. I sent them an email with the link from nyc.gov detailing the exemption and they said that they would forward it to the manager, but I am not sure they will as they were treating me as if I was some crazy person that did not understand what they were saying.
I checked and americanbridal.com is the same company as theknot.com and weddingchannel.com and they all show tax even if you buy only t-shirts shipping to NY.
I am waiting to see what happens but I think this is a HUGE glitch in their system. They are huge and I cannot fathom that someone has not brought this to their attention before. This reflects an 8.875% tax that they are illegally retaining.
All NY brides should be calling them! After all, that’s one more thing that’s great about NYC, tax free clothes and shoes if it’s under $110!
