Hi hive – my parents and fiance and I are traveling to NY state (Buffalo, Rochester, NYC) to visit some family on Saturday. I was hoping some of you could offer weather insight. When the weather says “chance of thunderstorms”…does that usually mean rain as well? Or will it storm off and on but not necessarily rain? I am trying to pack/plan and so I want to know what to expect on the days planned for thunderstorms.

I’ve noticed lately that “chance of thunderstorms” usually means the majority of the day could be nice (slightly cloudy/some sun) with a thunderstorm (with rain) in the late afternoon.
Also, the forecasts have been HORRIBLY wrong lately. If I check the weather early in the week (or even the week before) everything ends up getting off by about a day or completely changing altogether as the week progresses.
In short, prepare yourself for rain, but you could luck out and the weather might be totally different by the time you get here.

I’m a Rochester girl. Chance of thunderstoms typically means there is going to be a storm, and will most likely be a gloomy day. Usually it will say rain if there is going to be a steady rain going on.
I am literally watching the news as we speak and it is supposed to be a great weekend! It isn’t supposed to get rainy until Monday; however when you deal with Rochester/Buffalo weather that can change by tomorrow.
Enjoy your trip up here!

Thanks everyone for the advice/info! We are flying in late Saturday and then heading straight to Niagara Sunday morning (first time for FI!!). Looks to be sunny for that day, so fingers crossed. Cant say the same for Monday when we’re heading to Thousand Island Park/Alexandria Bay…but maybe we can figure something out!
