For all my NY State girls.
In New York State you can ONLY change your surname on the marriage license. Take your husbands, hyphenate, combine, etc.
If you wish to change your last name to your middle or any kind of change unrelated to your surname it has to be done through a Name Change Petition.
Basically you have to petition to the Supreme Court that you want to change your name.
Once the judge grants your name change you have to post a notice in the newspaper indicating that you are changing your name.
Then you go back to court again and your name change is granted.
It’s $65 in NYC and $210 elsewhere in NY State.
Here’s a website with helpful information and a online database to fill out all the forms.
Anyway, thought other ladies might find this useful since it took me forever to find the right information from a NY State site.
