Check out Sarah Postma, she’s in Chicago now, but she’s from NJ and shot in NYC often, and travels, she’s within your price range 🙂

seriously, take some time to look at http://www.AlexisSteinPhoto.com – it is who I booked for my wedding and I am super excited. They are an AMAZING photography couple based out of NY. You get 2 for the price of 1. I also sent you a PM.

Another good resource to check out is Wedding Photojournalist Association (http://www.wpja.com/).  One of my friends recommended them, and it’s a really great site.  It’s a specific style of photography (as the name indicates), but it lists photographers by regions and often will list their fares.

We found 3 or 4 people we really liked on this site, and there are a LOT to choose from.  And there seem to be a lot of good photographers who will stay within your budget.

Good luck with your searching!

I wrote an exhaustive artcle on the this question which you can read here:

and a bride/friend wrote a great one also here:

The wpja is okay but I find them to be not balanced enough, they frown on retouching and people looking in the camera. Look for someone who can balance portraits and photojounalism, for you want more than just a document of the day you want a sory to be told.

I have seen expensive Photographers who were bad and cheap ones who were good, it is sumed up by my bride Jill:

Some people might argue budget is a deal breaker, so why even waste time considering a photographer that appears to be out of budget? Because cost is something that can usually be negotiated. Quality cannot.

That was my range also but wound up spending $3000+ on Cly Creation because I found that a lot of people in the $2500 range were freelancers (photography is not a fulltime job so it was difficult to even meet up with them) or they did not have a long track record so I did not feel comfortable booking with them. I liked Cly;s blog and have several aquantances who used them. Only one was not completely satisfied with their work (1/4 people I asked) The only complaint I had with cly is that when I booked over the phone with Bo (the sales rep?), I asked for 2 specific photographers and she said they were both available. But when I showed up later in the week to sign the contract she renigged and said only one of the photogs I requested was available and that the other one had been booked earlier to another wedding party even though she told me over he phone that I was the first person to book that date. I know wedding vendors do this ALL the time, the bait and switch thing and I got one of the photographers I wanted but I’d rather them be straightforward. Asides from that I am satisfied with my decision and felt it was better than the other options in that price range…

I looked at wpga too. I checked Stregoica, I liked her photos but the phtographer is a freelancer (weddings are her PT job so she took a while to call me back)  and she required that I drive out to Sheepshead Bay Brooklyn in order to see full albums because she sd she could not carry them into Manhattan?????? So I opted out… She starts at $2800 I think…

I also checked out Yun Gen Yang, he gets really good reviews. He also starts around $2800. He was very nice, professional, calls back in a timely manner but I would up booking Cly before seeing his work in person. I would have defintely considered him though.

I also checked out Bloom Creativity. They start at $2000. They were very very nice but have only done 10 weddings. (And they only had 2 wedding albums to show me) so I didnt feel comfortable booking. But I think they are very talented and if you are willing to take a chance on someone new I would definetly reccomend checking them out.

Chris Chan Photography— I did not meet with him. But I know this guy personally he has done some weddings of friends and he comes highly reccomended. I didnt use him b/c his work isnt really my style but I have known him for a long time and I can persoannly attest that he is an honest, nice and very hard working guy.

Jeff Lau Photography— I dont know if he still does weddings but I know someone who used him.. and although he is nice she was very unhappy with the photos. Just too artistic for a wedding photographer. He took some interesteing creative shots, but not enough shots of the bride and groom. The bride said there werehardly any photos of her family– and more phtos of random children she barely knew… but she did say that he mentioned to her that he wanted to work in news/photjournalism not weddings… so maybe his heart was just not in wedding photos?

I also really liked Lina Jang and Images by Berit (but they are both $5000+ but I love their work!!!!) I tried calling Julie Newman several times but nevergot a call back so Im not sure what her rates are, but I like her work too…
