I am getting married on 12/12/2009 in nyc in a loft. they have no equipment, so the dj would need to have his own sound system. That being said, does anyone have any recommendations for a dj? we like house music, but know that it is a wedding after all, so we need a dj with a mix of music. salsa, house, current stuff like rihanna, and maybe some more classic tunes for the older set. we dislike cheesy dj’s and don’t expect them to talk much more than required.
soooo…..finally- we don’t want to spend over $1200, ideally $1K. Any recs out there? Again, its for NYC. Thanks!!!

DJ Gaza! http://www.djgaza.com/ He’s around $1200, and not cheesy at all!

I second DJ Gaza. I’m using him for my wedding. He’s really great.

I third DJ Gaza! Or his partner DJ DirtyJean, who actually DJ’ed my wedding – she’s so fab, they both are!

Agree with DJ Gaza. I did not have him personally but had one of his associates, Rob. He did a great job.

My friends recommend Julie Covello, their exact recommendation is cut and pasted below. I would recommend my DJ but you and I are day twins! (Congratulations!)
S and I were really happy with our DJ, Julie Covello – I don’t know what you thought of her – but she was super professional (she DJs at clubs for a living) has a vast catalog, and really tries to get a sense of musical tastes of the bride and groom and guests to build set lists. We priced lots of DJs, and while she wasn’t the cheapest, she wasn’t the most expensive – $1500 for 5 hours; check her out: http://www.djshakey.com/ . We actually loved her – she is flexible to playing ethnic music, and working into her sets, and played almost everything we asked for – not a small feat.

Definitely check out Rob at Colorblind Productions. Your music selection sounds a lot like mine and I loved that Rob is a ‘house head.’ He was able to pull off older stuff for the older crowd and switched things up with the music we love without losing the older folks on the floor. Definitely check him out!

try scratch academy. collin is great to work with. our dj (djay jung) was great. made some announcements but nothing cheesy at all. everyone had a blast. they provided all the equipment for us and it’s within your price range i think (you may have to negotiate hard tho)
