I’m trying to find a hair and makeup artist, and I wanted to get your opinion on cost.
As an aside: I got my hair and makeup done at a local salon for my city hall wedding and the cost was around $300.
I am looking at a couple of different hair and makeup artists for on-location services for the day of our (re)ceremony and reception.
The girl who did my makeup for the city hall ceremony offers on-location services, but I remember her saying she would need something like a few hundred (can’t remember the exact cost, and I replaced my phone and no longer have the text message) in order to make up for having to take the day, and that that would have to include attendants in order to meet the minimum. (I want to say it was at least $400, and that doesn’t include hair).
Another girl, the sister of one of my friends, is also a hair and makeup artist. She is offering me a price of $600 for:
-On location hair the day of
-On location makeup the day of (She said that on-location hair and makeup usually costs $500, but she’s doing it for me for $400 b/c I’m her sister’s friend)
-No minimum amount of people (ie. just me)
-Hair & makeup trial (at my friends’ house)
-Hair and makeup for our rehearsal dinner/engagement shoot (on same day)
Does this sound reasonable for the area? Am I paying an arm and a leg?

@multinational: Yep, pretty reasonable for NYC–especially including 2 trials. My on location hair/makeup will be $620 total (including 1 hair trial, and 2 makeup trials) and my hair/makeup people are just outside the city. Places I contacted in the city were much more. FWIW, My hair will be $250 (but I already paid $70 for 1 trial, so that makes it $320 total), makeup will be $300 (includes 2 trials).
ETA: These prices include airbrushed makeup and individual eyelashes.

You CAN find it cheaper. Bridal makeup is usually around $150. I’ve understand bridal hair to be around $250+.
You can usually find bridal makeup cheaper by going to a makeup counter at a dept store (MAC, Lancome, Chanel, Bobby Brown, Clinique, etc – pick your fave) and asking one of those girls if they can do it for you. My friend went to a MAC store and got one of the girls there to do a trial for her in the store. The cost for the trial was the makeup she bought that day. I don’t remember how much the girl charged her, but it wasn’t more than $150.
My friend paid $150 for bridal makeup and it included airbrushing.
My friend right now is paying $75 for makeup and $80+ for hair per Bridesmaid or Best Man. I don’t know how much her own hair is costing her, if it’s the same price or not. It’s outside NYC, but it’s on location.

Thanks for the reminder.
This price also includes airbrushing, any extensions I might need, eyelashes, etc.

@multinational: That doesn’t seem too expensive, then.

@futuremrsk18: This! I think you can get made up for $50 at Sephora (they let you spend the $50 on makeup at the store, so that can include the fake eyelashes that you use, etc). That is what I am planning to do for my elopement.

@Arrowchan: Sephora or another makeup counter is a great idea, however, I really really want on-location hair and makeup. I don’t want to be going to many different places in order to get stuff done. I’d like to be in a central location for the ease it will bring (and the photos!) :-).
