- Wedding: June 2009
I found a bunch of wedding vendors through Weddingbee and through other wedding sites from people’s reviews, so I thought I’d turn around and give back after my own!
You can see pictures on my photographer, Punam’s blog here:
Venue: Prince George Ballroom (A)
This is just a gorgeous venue. We used the tearoom for our ceremony, the gallery (with cool art) for our cocktail hour and of course the ballroom for our reception. Jonathan, the manager, is a really cool laid-back guy and I get the sense he doesn’t like overly neurotic people, but he will get you what you need and answer every question you have and make sure everything flows as smoothly as possible. Really, just a memorable, really pretty "old-NYC" style venue. Also, the money goes to charity. Gotta love that!
Caterer: Yen Ngo, Real Food Catering (A+++)
Yen is a DOLL and a half. Seriously, she is one of the nicest, most energetic people I have ever met. On top of being a good human being, she is the consummate professional. She will help you figure out the best catering plan for your event, and she really listens to what you want as well. She helped us cut our budget by quite a bit, and is not snooty at all about working with a tight budget. You can tell she truly cares about making it work for you. She is incredibly detail-oriented and organized. There is nothing she didn’t think of, and prepare for. Honestly, she made our wedding the best night of our lives. Her food is SO tasty, and impeccably presented. I am still dreaming of the truffled grilled cheese and the Peking Duck buns she made for us. YUM! She invites you to do a tasting in the kitchen or backstage at an event, so you can tell what the food will taste like mass-produced (absolutely scrumptious, NO LIES) and even though she was running another event, she never made us feel like our presence was unwanted or like we were in the way.
Her staff was courteous, well-trained, and there for everyone’s needs. All our guests complimented the waitstaff on being attentive and nice, and the bartenders for serving tasty, well-mixed drinks effciently so there was NEVER a wait at the bar. And that’s pretty hard for a 150 guest wedding with lots of big drinkers!
All in all, if I ever have the occasion to throw another big party, Yen is going to be my first call. And she should be yours!!!
DOC: Hollie Pena Holmes, Exquisite Affairs Productions (A+)
I know a lot of people on Weddingbee know of EAP already – but I need to give Hollie a big e-hug. She kept me calm and collected on the day of, and took care of everything. Let me just say that on the day of my weding, she was sick and had no voice. It didn’t matter at all, she still ran around like a true pro and kept everything moving along. If there were any problems, I never heard about them. Also, I had drawn up a detailed plan of how I wanted things set up at the venue, AND THEN FORGOT TO GIVE IT TO HER. it didn’t matter because when I got there, everything was where it should be, but she kept telling me anyway that it was OK if I wanted things switched around and that she would take care of it. She is FABULOUS. Absolutely one of the reasons why our wedding was SO. MUCH. FUN. because she never let me worry about a thing.
Photographer: Punam Bean (A+++)
You guys are familiar with Ms. Bean’s pretty pictures over on PRO, but if any of you ever thought she might be dificult to work with or anything like that (but why would you?), let me assuage your fears. Simply put, Punam rocks. Punam is down to earth accomodating and professional; she is funny, warm, and lovable, and she really is just awesome to hang out with. Even though at times she is quite the sneaky devil and gets in pictures of things you don’t even realize at the time, you can feel her overwhelmingly positive and warm energy, wishing you well your entire wedding day. And that is MORE than you could possibly want in a photographer. It really, really doesn’t hurt that she makes the most breathtakingly emotional and beautiful pictures I have ever seen.
Flowers: Carmine, Flowers by Emil (A)
Let me say that based on their Web site, I might have had some initial doubts. And let me follow that by saying they were all put to rest the moment I started discussing my flowers with Carmine. Carmine is quite the teddybear of a man — friendly, and ever so nice. And he absolutely works with your budget. I got my orghic bouquet, 4 bridesmaids bouquets, boutonierres and a gorgeous chuppah for $650. In NYC, that’s almost unheard of. And their work was GORGEOUS. Here’s the real kicker though — Carmine upgraded our chuppah to a bigger one, free of charge, when he saw the space and decided we needed more chuppah. Who does that? Only the best. Lesson learned: never judge a florist by their Web site.
DJ: DJ DirtyJean thru DJ Gaza (A++)
We had heard wonderful things about DJ Gaza – about how he was so professional and so good at reading the crowd and keeping people dancing. Dancing is verrry important to me and my husband, so we really needed a good, non-cheesy DJ. Well, he wasn’t available for our date, but he did suggest his friend, DJ Dirtyjean, who helps him out when he can’t make a date. DJ Dirtyjean is AMAZING in her own right. She is as cool as they come, really. Our friends and family never left the dance floor on our wedding night, and neither did we. She played everything we asked for, didn’t play anything on our do not play list, and read the crowd like an open book. She and DJ Gaza were incredibly well-organized and efficient before the wedding, and on the night of, she let it rip, she brought the house down with her skills. Let me say, I’m a huge fangirl now.
Videographer: Tom Morgan (A)
Videography was one of our last minute decisions – we really didn’t think we wanted it, but my family is from Hong Kong and a lot of them would not make it to the wedding, so we decided in the end it would be a good thign to have. I haven’t seen the final product yet but I have every reason to believe it will be great. Tom does non-cheesy videography at a very reasonable price. It’s not super artsy like some of the videography you see these days, but he makes a very good, no frills wedding video — which is exactly what we wanted. He worked with our budget, and gave us a really good deal. He was non-intrusive at the wedding, but he was right there caputring every important moment.
Sorry for the long post, I think those are the important ones, but I’m happy to answer any questions or give out more deets. Just PM me!
